In our verse by verse study of Romans last time we completed Rom 6:10; our Expanded Translation: "For the death [spiritual] that He [Christ] has died, He died once for all with reference to the sin nature: but the resurrection life which he lives, He lives with reference to the God."
We see from this that current positional truth demands that the believer live his life with reference to God. Union with Christ demands a new way of life for the believer in time, a way of life related to God the Father on the basis of grace and truth under the filling ministry of God the Holy Spirit. John 4:24;
Positional truth demands a new way of life compatible with the relationship between the resurrected humanity of Christ and God the Father. Current positional truth establishes the principle that the Christian way of life is the supernatural way of life with a supernatural means of execution.
This does not imply any supernatural phenomenon. It means that anything that the unbeliever can accomplish in life is not the Christian way of life. So we see from this that when the believer is under the influence of the old sin nature and functioning in accord the trends of the old sin nature, he simply imitates the moral religious unbeliever.
Christian way of life is not the imitation of the moral religious unbeliever.
Rom 6:11; "In the same way also consider yourselves to be dead to sin." Here there is an adverb "houtos" (in the same way) that separates the principles of doctrine from the application of doctrine.
It refers to what precedes and by this now makes the application. It is translated "So or in this manner" In other words, having assimilated doctrine and its implication it is now time to deploy it.
Next is the adjunctive use of the conjunction "kai" (also). This expresses the idea that doctrine demands application. The application of doctrine in your life results in spiritual growth and its function toward current events.
In this case we are dealing with its application to current events. Next is the present middle imperative from the verb "logizomai" (reason. calculate, to take into account, to evaluate, to estimate, to think, consider, ponder, have in mind, to be of the opinion).
It is a verb of rational application. In this case we follow the Attic Greek concept of "logizomai" (logic) that connoted thought according to strict logical rules, so it means to deliberate or to conclude or logically evaluate information.
Plato actually assigned the verb the meaning of non-emotional thinking. Emotion may result from thought but emotion must never be allowed to destroy thought. "So also all you yourselves conclude (think doctrinally)."
This means to apply doctrine. The present tense is an aorist present describing momentary action in present time. This is a direct middle voice referring to the results of the action directly to the agent or the believer with reflexive force.
The imperative mood is an entreaty rather than a command, an entreaty that does not convey the finality of a command but has the force of urgency.
It is always urgent that we begin to think in terms of doctrine, and when we have a conflict in our soul between how we feel and what God's Word of truth says we must always go with what God's Word says rather than how we feel.
Emotion must never destroy our ability to reason and to think. Our highest form of emotion must come from the stimulation of thought, rather than the destruction of thought.
Doctrine means reason, thought, following a system of thought for spiritual growth and for application. Then we again have the word "yourselves." This time, instead of being a part of the reflexive middle voice it is a reflexive pronoun, the accusative plural of general reference from the reflexive pronoun "heautou" (yourselves).
Here the accusative is used with the infinitive so it is not actually the subject of the infinitive because that is coming up but it describes all the people connected with the action of the infinitive and that is all believers.
So it is translated as the subject of the verb "eimi" (to be). By making it the subject of the infinitive, immediately we have the issue of having to have to acquire doctrine for yourself.
"Logizomai" is authority, it is the application of doctrine to experience; doctrine is the authority in our lives. With this authority we have to have an infinitive, and that is why we have the accusative of general reference. With the present active infinitive of "eimi" as the subject is "heautou" (yourselves).
Our translation so far "So also all of you yourselves conclude yourselves to be dead to sin."
We see that a verb of application also exercises authority, for the infinitive is under the authority of the main verb. That is the static present of "eimi" to be () for a condition or circumstance of death that perpetually exists from retroactive positional truth.
The active voice: the believer produces the action of the verb through being identified with Christ in His death. The infinitive is an actual result of the baptism of the Holy Spirit that occurs at the point of salvation.
With this is an accusative plural direct object of the infinitive from the adjective "nekros" (dead) used as a substantive to describe retroactive positional truth destroying the sovereignty and authority of the old sin nature as the ruler of our human life.
Plus the affirmative particle "men," (indeed) used correlatively with "de" (but) in Attic Greek style meaning on the one hand and on the other hand.
Plus the dative of reference singular from "hamartia" (sin) from the previous reference to the old sin nature.
From this our translation "So also, on the one hand, all of you yourselves conclude yourselves to be dead with reference to the sin nature."
The conclusion called for in this verse demands complete understanding of the doctrines of the baptism of the Spirit and retroactive and current positional truth.
In this section of the verse retroactive positional truth is in view. Retroactive positional truth means identification with Christ in His deaths, His spiritual death, His physical death, and burial.
Identification with Christ in His spiritual death relates to the non-imputation of good and evil at the cross so it is the, rejection of good and evil as satan's policy plus the judgment for the entire production of the old sin nature.
In the spiritual death of Christ on the cross all personal sins were imputed to Christ and judged, on the cross but good and evil were separated out and neither imputed nor judged.
In the physical death of Christ and His burial there was a total separation from good and evil. The body of Jesus Christ was in the grave, separated from good and evil.
The spirit of Christ was in the presence of the Father, separated from good and evil. The soul of Jesus Christ was in Paradise with God the Holy Spirit, separated from good and evil.
This means that by identification with Christ in His physical death and burial in retroactive positional truth the believer is also positionally separated from good and evil.
Positionally, then, the believer has both rejected and been separated from good and evil. This means the power and authority of the old sin nature, as the ruler of human life is broken positionally.
This opens the way for the experiential victory over the old sin nature whose power has been destroyed. This is that predicate for our freedom in Christ. We must understand this because we cannot apply what we do not understand.
"but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord" the conjunctive particle "de" (but) is used to connect one clause with another, as per Attic Greek: "but on the other hand." Plus the present active participle from the verb "zaw" (alive or to live).
The present tense is the present tense of duration that describes something began in the past and continues into the present time. The active voice: the believer in Jesus Christ through the baptism of the Spirit and current positional truth produces the action of the verb. The participle is circumstantial for the reality of current positional truth.
Plus the dative of reference from "Theos" (God) plus the definite article "de" (the) making it monadic and used for the God whose identity is clear to the readers.
A prepositional phrase follows; "en" (in) plus the locative of two proper nouns for God the Son, "Christos" (Christ) "Iesous" (Jesus) "Christ Jesus."
Translation: "but on the other hand living with reference to the God in Christ Jesus. The prepositional phrase, "in Christ Jesus" emphasizes positional truth or union with Christ that is the core description of Christianity.
Christianity is not a religion Christianity is a relationship.
Expanded Translation Rom 6:11; "So also on the one hand all of you yourselves conclude yourselves to be dead with reference to the sin nature, but on the other hand living with reference to the God in Christ Jesus."
The conclusion from the doctrines of positional truth, whether retroactive or current, is stated as application in this verse.
Rom 6:12; Since living with reference to the God constitutes the fulfillment of the principle of potential + capacity = reality, it is necessary for the rulership of the old sin nature to be experientially cancelled or abrogated.
Positionally this was accomplished at the point at which we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ. "Let not sin reign in your mortal body"
This is not saying that the sin nature is excluded from the mortal body it is saying that its rulership must be cancelled. Until the day that we die the old sin nature will continue to live in every cell of the biological human body.
This begins with the inferential particle "oun" (then) that introduces an inference from preceding positional victory over the old sin nature from retroactive positional truth.
Followed by an inference to the experiential victory over the old sin nature that explains how Jesus Christ experientially becomes the ruler of your life.
The Lord Jesus Christ is positionally your savior and Lord but He is not necessarily your sovereign experientially.
There is a huge difference between positional victory over the old sin nature and experiential victory. The experiential factor deals with the believer being occupied with the person of Jesus Christ that only comes from maximum metabolized doctrine resident and circulating in the soul's stream of consciousness.
Next is the negative particle "me" (not) used as a part of an imperative of prohibition, when it is used with a verb in to set up a negative imperative that expresses a negative command.
The negative "oun" (then) denies the fact; the negative "me" (not) denies the idea. The nominative singular subject "hamartia" (sin) with the definite article "ho" (the) refers to the old sin nature as the antagonist describing the old sin nature as the sovereign over human life that rules through spiritual death.
Our translation so far is "Therefore, do not let the sin nature." Plus the verb, the present active imperative of "basileuo" (rule) a word that is used for absolute sovereignty that means to continue to rule so it means to continue to rule after salvation.
Positionally the power of the old sin nature is broken and destroyed but whether this becomes an experiential reality depends upon the believer's attitude toward doctrine, the application of the rebound technique, and the volitional choice to choose for Jesus Christ rather than one's self interests.
The progressive present tense has very strong linear action in the imperative mood with the negative" me" (not) means to stop an activity that is already in progress.
The active voice: the believer in Jesus Christ executes the negative command based upon positional provision of retroactive positional truth, plus the experiential provision of grace and logistical support under the ministry of God the Holy Spirit in advancing to maturity.
This is an imperative mood of prohibition where the prohibition in the present imperative tense demands that an action that is in progress be terminated and stopped.
Paul is addressing believers who because of their ignorance of Bible doctrine are totally disoriented to God's plan and have continued to permit the old sin nature to rule in their lives.
Next is the prepositional phrase, "en" (in) with the locative neuter singular from the adjective "thentos" (mortal or subject to physical death).
The adjective is used to describe the existence of the old sin nature in the genetic cell structure of the biological human body that is the precursor that leads to physical death or vulnerability to disease that leads to physical death.
In other words, the corrupting influence, the ageing influence of the biological human body is the presence of the old sin nature. It is not only the ruler of human life through its trends but it is also the basis for ageing and disease.
Next is the locative of sphere from "soma" (body) that is used to describe human body where the old sin nature is located, plus the possessive genitive plural from the pronoun "hymon" (your) so we have "your body."
Literally we have "Therefore stop permitting the sin nature ruling in your mortal body."
The command to stop permitting indicates that we have some control over the matter because our volition is very definitely involved. The sin nature is located in the cell structure of the body and life is located in the soul.
"that you obey its lusts" the prepositional phrase "eis" (that) plus the articular present active infinitive "hupakouo" (obey). "Eis" (for) plus the infinitive usually indicates a purpose clause, so we translate it "that you should obey" or recognize authority and place one's self under it.
Here we have the retroactive progressive present describing the rulership of the old sin nature that started at physical birth and continues into the present time, even after the new birth. The active voice: the old sin nature produces the action of the verb by ruling over human life.
The infinitive of purpose with "eis" (for) expresses the object of he finite verb. Plus the instrumental plural of manner from "epithumia" (desires or lusts aka trends), with the instrumental with definite article "ho" (the) that used as a possessive pronoun. It is an instrumental of manner that expresses how an act is performed or an objective is achieved.
The old sin nature dominates the lust pattern with its trends toward sin, good, and evil. It should be translated "that you should obey the same (the old sin nature) with its trends."
The trends are the means whereby the old sin nature functions as the sovereign of human life. The objective genitive singular from the intensive pronoun "autos " (of it). This is the attributive use of "autos" (of it) that emphasizes the trends of the old sin nature.
Expanded Translation Rom 6:12; "Therefore, stop permitting the sin nature ruling in your mortal body, that you should obey the same (the old sin nature) with its trends."
