In our verse-by-verse study of Romans we are in Rom 6:11; our Expanded Translation so far ""So also, on the one hand, all of you yourselves conclude yourselves to be dead with reference to the sin nature."
The conclusion called for in this verse demands complete understanding of the doctrines of the baptism of the Spirit and of retroactive and current positional truth.
In this phrase of the verse retroactive positional truth is in view. Retroactive positional truth means identification with Christ in His deaths, His spiritual death, His physical death, and burial.
Identification with Christ in His spiritual death relates to the non-imputation of good and evil at the cross so it is the, rejection of good and evil as satan's policy plus the judgment for the entire production of the old sin nature.
In the spiritual death of Christ on the cross all personal sins were imputed to Christ and judged but good and evil were separated out and neither imputed nor judged.
In the physical death of Christ and His burial there was a total separation from good and evil. The body of Jesus Christ was separated from good and evil in the tomb.
The spirit of Christ was separated from good and evil in the presence of the Father. The soul of Jesus Christ was separated from good and evil in Paradise with God the Holy Spirit.
This means that by identification with Christ in His physical death and burial in retroactive positional truth the believer is also positionally separated from good and evil.
Positionally, then, the believer has both rejected and been separated from good and evil. This means the power and authority of the old sin nature, as the ruler of human life is broken positionally.
This opens the way for the experiential victory over the old sin nature whose power has been destroyed by God through Jesus Christ.
This is that predicate for our freedom in Christ. We must understand this because we cannot apply what we do not know, understand and believe.
"but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord" the conjunctive particle "de" (but) is used to connect one clause with another; in the Attic Greek it means "but on the other hand." Plus the present active participle from the verb "zao" (alive or to live).
The present tense is the present tense of duration that describes something began in the past and continues into the present time. The active voice: the believer in Jesus Christ through the baptism of the Spirit and current positional truth produces the action of the verb. The participle is circumstantial for the absolute reality of current positional truth.
Plus the dative of reference from "Theos" (God) plus the definite article "de" (the) making it monadic. In this case it is used to refer the God the Father whose identity is well known to the readers.
A prepositional phrase follows; "en" (in) plus the locative of two proper nouns for God the Son, "Christos" (Christ) "Iesous" (Jesus) "Christ Jesus."
Translation: "but on the other hand living with reference to the God in Christ Jesus. The prepositional phrase, "in Christ Jesus" emphasizes positional truth or union with Christ that is the central issue in Christianity.
Christianity is not a religion Christianity is an irrevocable relationship that is combined with fellowship with Jesus Christ.
Expanded Translation Rom 6:11; "So also on the one hand all of you yourselves conclude yourselves to be dead with reference to the sin nature, but on the other hand alive with reference to the God in Christ Jesus."
The doctrine of retroactive and current positional truth is stated as the conclusion for application in this verse.
Rom 6:12; Since living with reference to the God constitutes the fulfillment of the principle of potential + capacity = reality, it is necessary for the rulership of the old sin nature to be experientially cancelled, abrogated, destroyed and rescinded.
Positionally this was accomplished at the point at which we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ. "Let not sin reign in your mortal body"
This is not saying that the sin nature is excluded from the mortal body it is saying that its rulership must be rejected.
Until the day that we die biologically the old sin nature will continue to live in every cell of the biological human body and remain a challenge to our volition.
This begins with the inferential particle "oun" (then) that introduces an inference from preceding positional victory over the old sin nature that is predicated on retroactive positional truth.
Followed by an inference to the experiential victory over the old sin nature that explains how Jesus Christ replaces the old sin nature and becomes the ruler of your life experientially.
The Lord Jesus Christ is positionally your savior and Lord but He is not necessarily your sovereign Lord experientially.
There is a huge difference between positional victory over the old sin nature and experiential victory. The experiential factor deals with the believer being occupied with the person of Jesus Christ and that only comes from maximum metabolized doctrine resident and circulating in the soul's stream of consciousness.
Next is the negative particle "me" (not) that is used as an imperative of prohibition, when it is used with a verb it sets up a negative imperative that expresses a negative command to stop doing something.
The negative "oun" (then) denies the fact; the negative "me" (not) denies the idea. The nominative singular subject "hamartia" (sin) with the definite article "ho" (the) refers to the old sin nature as the antagonist describing the old sin nature as the sovereign over human life that rules through spiritual death.
Our translation so far is "Therefore, do not let the sin nature." Plus the present active imperative of "basileuo" (rule) a verb that is used to describe absolute sovereignty that means to continue to rule so it means to continue to rule after salvation.
Positionally the power of the old sin nature is broken and destroyed but whether this becomes an experiential reality depends upon the believer's attitude toward doctrine, the application of the rebound technique, and the volitional choice to choose for Jesus Christ and God's Word of truth rather than the lust trends of the sin nature.
The progressive present tense in the imperative mood has very strong linear action that along with the negative" me" (not) means to stop an activity that is in progress.
The active voice: the believer in Jesus Christ executes the negative command based upon positional provision of retroactive positional truth, plus the experiential provision of grace and logistical support from God under the ministry of God the Holy Spirit to advance to spiritual maturity.
This is an imperative mood of prohibition where the prohibition in the present imperative tense demands that an action that is in progress must be terminated and stopped.
Paul is addressing believers who because of their ignorance of Bible doctrine are totally disoriented to God's plan and have continued to permit the old sin nature's trends to rule in their lives.
Next is the prepositional phrase, "en" (in) with the locative neuter singular from the adjective "thnetos" (mortal or subject to physical death).
The adjective is used to describe the existence of the old sin nature in the genetic cell structure of the biological human body that is the precursor to physical death or vulnerability to disease or injury that leads to physical death.
In other words, the corrupting influence, the ageing influence and entropy of the biological human body is the presence of the old sin nature. It is not only the ruler of human life through its trends but it is also the basis for ageing, disease and injury that leads to physical death.
Next is the locative of sphere from "soma" (body) that is used to describe human body where the old sin nature is located, plus the possessive genitive plural from the pronoun "hymon" (your) so we have "your body."
Literally we have "Therefore stop permitting the sin nature to rule in your mortal body."
The command to stop permitting indicates that we have some control over the matter because our volition is very definitely involved. The sin nature is located in the cell structure of the biological body but human life is located in the soul.
"that you obey its lusts" the prepositional phrase "eis" (that) plus the articular present active infinitive "hupakouo" (obey). "Eis" (for) plus the infinitive usually indicates a purpose clause, so we translate it "that you should obey" or recognize authority and place one's self under it.
Here we have the retroactive progressive present describing the rulership of the old sin nature that started at physical birth and continues into the present time, even after its authority has been terminated by the new birth. The active voice: the old sin nature produces the action of the verb by ruling over human life.
The infinitive of purpose with "eis" (for) expresses the object of he finite verb. Plus the instrumental plural of manner from "epithumia" (desires or lusts aka trends), with the instrumental with definite article "ho" (the) that used as a possessive pronoun. It is an instrumental of manner that expresses how an act is performed or an objective is achieved.
The old sin nature dominates the lust pattern with its trends toward sin, good, and evil. It should be translated "that you should obey the same referring to the old sin nature with its trends."
The trends are the means whereby the old sin nature functions as the sovereign of human life. The objective genitive singular from the intensive pronoun "autos " (of it). This is the attributive use of "autos" (of it) that emphasizes the trends of the old sin nature.
Expanded Translation Rom 6:12; "Therefore, stop permitting the sin nature to rule in your mortal body, that you should obey the same (the old sin nature) with its trends."
This is a negative command. This is something that every believer has to turn off and shut down. This negative command of prohibition indicates that the believer has an option after salvation regarding the rulership of the old sin nature.
A result of the baptism of the Spirit at salvation and retroactive positional truth the sovereignty and the authority of the old sin nature as the ruler of life has been broken positionally. This is true for every believer. The fact of the abrogation of the old sin nature's power means that experientially there can be and should be a change in the believer's life.
This means that the choice is the issue but how and where do we exercise our choices? What is the exercise of the function of our choices? The choice lies on the experiential side of Christianity because it is related to Christianity experientially not positionally.
Positional Christianity gives us the opportunity to exercise our choices, but the choice is made in the venue of Christian experience.
This choice is exercised in at least two ways that can be simply described as maturity adjustment to God's justice. There are two opportunities to make continuous choices.
One of them has to do with an instantaneous recovery from carnality (sin nature control of the soul). Because sins were imputed and judged at the cross when we are out of fellowship we can name our sins and immediately be forgiven through rebound adjustment to God's justice.
So we exercise our first option by grace orientation regarding the doctrine of rebound. The second venue where a choice must be made has to do with Bible doctrine. This is where maturity adjustment to God's justice is developed as the second use of constant positive volition.
We must make our choice for doctrine every day so that through the function of GASP we can grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ. And once we attain spiritual maturity then the old sin nature is not in continuous control of our lives experientially so we are living in "the new life."
While the above is the principle the functional concept is the utilization of logistical grace, that includes rebound, the filling ministry of God the Holy Spirit and the daily function of GASP or consistent positive volition toward Bible doctrine (faith).
This concept will be amplified in the next verse under the principle of yielding. In the meantime we need to be aware of the fact that God has provided through logistical grace everything that is necessary for our obedience to this command to stop permitting, and the command in the next verse to yield.
The execution of God's commands would be impossible without His support through logistical grace. Therefore at this point we have to conclude that logistical grace is what makes it possible for our experiential victory over the old sin nature.
