In our verse by verse study of Romans last time we finished our Expanded Translation of Rom 6:17; "Now thanks to the God that you were (kept on being) slaves to the sin nature, but (this is what is new) now you have obeyed by means of the right lobe of the soul a doctrinal system (pattern of teaching) into which (he doctrinal system) you were committed."
We see from this that salvation has impact on both temporal and eternal life. In this context the emphasis is on the fact that after salvation God has delivered us over to a doctrinal system that is only means of advance to spiritual maturity, and the only way to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ.
The fact that God has delivered us over to a doctrinal system emphasizes the principle that we should exercise our option for the perception of doctrine every day. We please Jesus Christ with our consistent intake of Bible doctrine.
Since learning doctrine is the most important thing that we do in this life we should demonstrate positive volition toward God's plan by the daily function of GASP. We must be determined to learn the doctrine that is the sine que non of the Christian life.
Being committed to Jesus Christ means receiving the delivery of Bible doctrine as taught by one's right pastor-teacher. This verse emphasizes our former status as unbelievers in terms of the ruler ship old sin nature rather than personal sin.
We see here that obedience comes from doctrine in the thinking it does not come from the emotions or influence from peer pressure.
This doctrinal system must be resident and circulating in the thinking of our soul for us to obey Jesus Christ. This doctrinal system is the means by which we fulfill the command of verse 13-to put ourselves under the command of God and to place our members under His command.
This system of doctrine that is handed over or delivered, to the believe is the only way that the believer can advance spiritually it is the only way the believer can glorify the Lord Jesus Christ, and it is the only system for living the Christian life.
Nothing in Christianity can ever be separated from the PMA of Bible doctrine because it is the thinking of Christ. Rejection of and ignorance of Bible doctrine are the worst offences that a believer can do against our Lord Jesus Christ.
Rom 6:18; "Having been freed from sin." The postpositive conjunctive particle ""de" (but) is used as a simple transitional conjunction without any contrast so it simply links it to the previous verse.
Plus the aorist passive participle from the verb "eleutheroo (having been freed) so we have "And having been set free."
The aorist tense is a constantive aorist that takes the occurrence of salvation adjustment to God's justice through the baptism that provides positional freedom and connects it to maturity adjustment to God's justice from metabolized doctrine in the thinking and pulls it together into one entirety.
The passive voice: the believer receives the action of the verb through the three adjustments to God's justice (salvation, rebound, and maturity). It is an instrumental participle that explains how the action of the main verb is accomplished.
The action of the aorist participle precedes the action of the main verb. The main verb "douloo" (you were enslaved)" "And you have been set free" is a good translation.
By having been set free positionally and experientially "from sin" the preposition "apo" (from) plus the definite article "ho" (the) plus the singular of "hamartia" (sin). As we have previously noted the singular with the definite article makes it monadic so it refers to the sin nature so we have "from the sin nature."
Before we are born again the sin nature is the ruler of biological human life because of spiritual death.
The ruler ship of the sin nature over human life begins at physical birth from two real imputations: the imputation of human life to its divinely prepared home, the soul, and the imputation of Adam's original sin to the genetically prepared home, the old sin nature.
The ruler ship of the old sin nature over human life is terminated positionally at salvation through the baptism of the Holy Spirit and the retroactive positional truth of being united with Jesus in his deaths.
The ruler ship of the sin nature over human life terminates experientially at maturity adjustment to God's justice through the doctrinal system that has become resident and established in the thinking.
This doctrinal system in the soul reprograms the thinking of the brain where the old sin nature resides. The thinking that was saturated with good and evil, lies and disinformation from satan's cosmos becomes saturated with the God's policies and principles.
In other words, at spiritual maturity the believer has reprogrammed the thinking of their brain with God's viewpoint so God's viewpoint has become their frame of reference for thinking on the basis of grace and truth.
"you became slaves of righteousness" the aorist passive indicative of the verb "douloo" (be enslaves) it means to become enslaved.
The aorist tense is a culminative aorist that views the positional and experiential freedom the sovereignty of the old sin nature in its entirety and regards it from the viewpoint of the existing results of the mature believer being enslaved to righteousness.
That means that sooner or later believers must recognize that God's justice is the source of all blessing as well as discipline in life.
Remember the principle that God's justice can only bless perfect righteousness. Every blessing we have comes because we have God's righteous ness, not because of our own righteousness.
We are never blessed because of what we do we are blessed because of what we are. Every believer is positionally righteous.
The believer moving toward spiritual maturity is dedicated to the principle of the imputation of divine righteousness that was received at salvation.
"You became enslaved to righteousness." The passive voice: the spiritually mature believer receives the action of the verb that is the predicated on the exploitation of imputed righteousness.
The imputed righteousness that was received at salvation is exploited by God's doctrinal system of thinking.
You have received righteousness imputed at salvation but only by deploying God's doctrinal system of thinking will you exploit the fact that you possess a grace pipeline that is connected directly from God's justice to God's righteousness in you.
The only way that you can exploit what you received at salvation is through the PMA of Bible doctrine. There is no other way. The indicative mood is declarative for a dogmatic statement of doctrine regarding the spiritually mature believer.
The indicative mood is also the way of explaining the main verb.
"dikaiosune" (righteousness) this is a dative singular direct object, with the definite article "ho" (the) making it monadic so it refers to righteousness that has been defined in the context. This is "the dikaiosune" (the righteousness) so it refers to God's righteousness.
Expanded Translation Rom 6:18; "And by having been set free (both positionally and experientially) from the sin nature, you became enslaved to God's righteousness."
God's righteousness is the principle of God's integrity and God's justice is the function of God's integrity. Righteousness demands righteousness; justice demands justice ands what righteousness demands, justice executes.
This is the basis for all blessing in the spiritual life. What righteousness demands justice executes. Justice is the point of reference for the spiritually dead human race since the fall of mankind in the Garden.
God's justice can only bless God's righteousness. Therefore being enslaved to God's righteousness is the status of spiritual mature believers who glorify God, and receive maximum blessing from God's justice.
Slavery to God's righteousness in spiritual maturity is the status of maximum blessing from God and maximum glorification of God in history regardless of the current trend of history.
