In our verse-by-verse study of Romans we are in Rom 7:5; that takes us back to review the production of the first marriage in the analogy. "For when we were in the flesh," a reference to the analogy of being an unbeliever in the marriage to the sin nature.
The explanatory use starts with conjunctive particle gar, "for" so the explanation follows next is the temporal particle "hote" (when) that is used as a temporal conjunction, plus the imperfect active indicative of the verb "eimi" (the verb to be) translated "we were."
The imperfect tense is a progressive imperfect that describes linear action in past time. This is also known as an imperfect of duration, that tells us that in past time, from birth to salvation, the old sin nature was the husband, that had absolute authority over us.
The active voice: the believer produces the action of the verb under the sovereignty of the first husband, now divorced, the old sin nature. The indicative mood is declarative representing the verbal idea from the standpoint of reality.
Then the prepositional phrase en plus the locative singular of "sarx" (flesh) referring to the old sin nature so we have "For when we were in the flesh (OSN)," or "For while we were in the flesh (OSN)."
This is a reference to the status of the unbeliever from physical birth to spiritual birth. If this status continues after spiritual birth it is classified as carnality or reversionism.
Carnality is sinning without rebound. The sovereignty of the old sin nature has been broken positionally by the baptism of the Holy Spirit and retroactive positional truth. So this phrase refers to the unbeliever's experiential status in life under the control of the sin nature.
The imputation of our personal sins on the cross is not what is in view in retroactive positional truth. Retroactive positional truth is the rejection of human good and evil, the other two productions that result from the trends of the old sin nature.
The rejection of the human good and evil trends of the sin nature are equivalent to the rejection of the first husband that is followed by the separation from the first husband and then divorce from the first husband when a person believes in Jesus Christ. This is the concept that is presented by retroactive positional truth.
"sinful passions" from the nominative plural subject "pathema" (sufferings, misfortunes, passions). The noun was used in the Greek to describe the bad things that happen to a person that have to be accepted.
It really means an impulse or trend or to follow an impulse or trend. With this is the possessive genitive plural from the noun "hamartia" (sins) in the plural so it refers to personal sins that are categorized into the three classifications of mental attitude, verbal, and overt sins.
So we will translate it as "the sinful impulses" or "the sinful trends." The sinful impulses are the production or children of the first marriage. If you continue to function in human good and evil then you are unfaithful to the second husband because the only production or children produced by second marriage is the filling of the Holy Spirit plus the consistent function in God's Word under GASP that results in maturity adjustment to God's justice.
This is the production that glorifies God the Father that is the source of the blessings that God's justice provides for the mature believer, blessings that are secure, and blessings for which you have capacity.
How do we know the trend is sinful? The 10 commandments of the Mosaic Law define sin in all of its categories and makes it very clear what personal sin is.
"which were by the law" from the nominative plural definite article "ho" used as a relative pronoun, "which," the preposition "dia" (through or by means of) plus the genitive of "nomos" (law) with the definite article "ho" (the) translated "which through the law" making it monadic so "ho nomos" refers exclusively to the Mosaic Law as the marriage counselor for the unbeliever.
"were at work in our members" imperfect middle indicative of the verb "energeo" (to be operative, effective, or at work). "Which through the law were effective," we understand that these things are sins because the Mosaic Law that is the marriage counselor for our first marriage to the sin nature defines them for us.
The progressive imperfect tense of duration describes what has occurred in the past up to the point of salvation where the divorce from the first husband occurred.
The middle voice emphasizes the part of the process that the subject has in the action of the verb. The indicative mood is declarative representing verbal action from the viewpoint of reality.
Plus the preposition en plus the locative plural from "melos" (members) referring to all of the parts of the human body but especially to the brain where choices are made, and the possessive genitive plural from the personal pronoun "hemeis" (our).
"to bear fruit to death" "eis" (to or into) referring to the result plus the accusative of the definite article "ho" (the) with the aorist active infinitive of the verb "karpophoreo" (to bear fruit or to produce, resulting in the production of fruit).
The constantive aorist gathers up into one entirety the rulership of the old sin nature over the life of the individual from physical birth to the new birth.
The active voice: the trends of the old sin nature produce the action of the verb. The infinitive is the infinitive of actual result. Plus the instrumental of association singular from "thanatos" (death) with the article "ho" (the) so we have "the death" making it monadic so it refers exclusively to spiritual death not physical death.
Expanded Translation Rom 7:5; "For while were in the flesh (OSN), the sinful trends which through the law were effective in our members, resulting in the production of fruit associated with spiritual death."
This is verse is describing the past, prior to salvation where through the two imputations at physical birth we became humanly alive and spiritually dead and were hooked up to the old sin nature in a relationship similar to a marriage.
The two real imputations that occurred at physical birth combined to produce the situation in the first marriage.
The result of spiritual death was not only the sovereign rule of the old sin nature over human life, but the function of its trends into death.
In this passage the old sin nature's trend toward sin is the one emphasized because this trend was solved at the cross.
The Mosaic Law explains what personal sins are. Romans 3:20; 1Tim 1:9-10;
Rom 7:6; "But now we have been released from the law" begins with the postpositive conjunctive particle "de" (but) that is used to connect two contrasting clauses.
The first clause refers to the production of the first marriage; second clause refers to the production of the second marriage. The adverb of time "nuni" (now) refers to the fact that we are now in the second marriage after we have believed in Jesus Christ for salvation adjustment to God's justice and current positional truth whereby we were divorced from the sin nature and married to the Lord Jesus Christ.
The verb is the aorist passive indicative of "katargeo"(released) that means to destroy, abolish, or to render inoperative. In the passive voice it means to be released from an association with something. "But now we have been released." It is describes the divorce from the sin nature.
The aorist tense is a culminative aorist that views the baptism of the Spirit at salvation in its entirety, it views it here from existing results of the release from the first husband and release from the Mosaic Law as the marriage counselor of the first marriage.
'The Mosaic Law is not the marriage counselor of the second marriage. When you believed in Jesus Christ you were divorced from the first husband and you left the law behind.
Then the prepositional phrase "apo" (the) plus the ablative of "nomos (law) "But now we have been released from the law."
The first marriage existed from birth to regeneration. The Mosaic Law was the marriage counselor of the first marriage between mankind and the old sin nature during that period of time.
The divorce is based on salvation adjustment to God's justice on the basis of faith in Jesus Christ. The divorce part in salvation corresponds to retroactive positional truth. The believer has rejected, separated from and divorced the old sin nature when they were born again.
Remember that good and evil is the function of the old sin nature that corresponds to the first husband. Good and evil is used as the principle. The Mosaic Law as the marriage counselor teaches us about the reality of the old sin nature and the function of the old sin nature's trends.
The law informs us that mankind has a bad marriage in the relationship to the old sin nature. The law also points to the solution, revealing salvation through the ritual of the Levitical offerings, the holy days, the function of the Levitical priesthood and the various articles of furniture in the tabernacle.
Once mankind has believed in Christ the law can do nothing further as a marriage counselor since the believer is married to Christ through the baptism of the Spirit and current positional truth. Therefore, the believer has been released from the law as the marriage counselor of the first marriage per Rom 10:4.
Rom 7:6; "having died to that by which we were bound" the aorist active participle from the verb "apothnesko" (having died). The words "to that" are not in the original Greek they are supplied for the English reader.
The constantive aorist gathers up into one entirety or bucket the baptism of the Holy Spirit at salvation that describes the momentary action that occurs when we believe in the Lord Jesus Christ.
The active voice: the believer produces the action of the verb at salvation through retroactive positional truth. In this case the verb "to die" refers to divorce, not to physical death "by having died" or "through being dead," is an instrumental that explains how the action of the verb is accomplished.
Then "en" (in at or by) plus the instrumental from the relative pronoun "hos"(which) translated "by which." Plus the imperfect passive indicative of the verb "katecho" (we were being bound, held or suppressed) "through having died to that by which we were suppressed" is a reference to the tyranny of the relationship to the sin nature in the first marriage.
"so that we should serve in newness of spirit" the conjunction "hoste" (so that) introduces the dependent purpose clause can be translated "for the purpose of" plus the present active infinitive of "douleuo" (to slave) that means to be a slave and therefore to be under authority.
The infinitive has as its subject the accusative plural from the personal pronoun "ego" (we), that is an accusative of general reference, translated "we" that serves as the subject of the infinitive that changes the translation to, "so that we might serve as slaves."
The customary present tense explains that what may reasonably be expected to occur in the second marriage to the Lord Jesus Christ is the will and the policy of the second husband, that the wife, referring to the believer to advance to spiritual maturity and receive the blessings of supergrace from God's justice that glorify God the Father.
When we understand and believe this principle we will never let go of divine viewpoint because we recognize without a doubt that if God doesn't promote us we are not really promoted and if God doesn't prosper us we are not really prospered so we aren't interested in being prospered or promoted by any other means. We always wait on God's provision.
The active voice: each one of us as believers. The infinitive is the infinitive of intended result, when the result is indicated as fulfilling a deliberate objective-"so that we might serve."
Plus "en" (in) plus the locative of "kainotes" (newness) this is newness in the sense of something completely new and incorruptible. Even the law can be corrupted by human distortion, but the Holy Spirit is God and He is never corrupted because He is incorruptible.
So there is the principle of corruptibility that neutralizes the effectiveness of the Mosaic Law in its application but God can never be neutralized because He cannot be corrupted. Then the ablative of means singular from "pneuma" (spirit), that does not have an article so it is anartharous indicating the highest quality of incorruptibility.
This expresses the means when the source is indicated. Expanded translation "that we might serve in a new marriage by means of (Holy) Spirit."
God the Holy Spirit will give the information we need to make a positive decision when it should be positive, a negative decision when it should be negative, provided that God the Holy Spirit has placed the doctrinal information into your soul from your positive volition to learn it.
God the Holy Spirit only uses absolute doctrinal truth. But the marriage counselor does not go where He is not wanted, and every time we commit a sin without rebound, and when we become involved in good and evil, then we are grieving and quenching the Spirit so the Spirit does not control us.
The Holy Spirit is the marriage counselor for the new marriage to Jesus Christ. This means that the /God the Holy Spirit through Bible doctrine provides the motivation, the inspiration, and the reality of our relationship to our Lord Jesus Christ.
"and not in the oldness of letter" - the connective use of the conjunction "kai" (and) and the negative adverb "ou" (not), "and not." We are finished with the old marriage counselor the Mosaic Law.
Then the locative singular of "palaiotes" (old), that is used as an adjective "and not in the old marriage." The means is "gramma" (letter) "by letter," referring to the Mosaic Law.
Expanded Translation Rom 7:6; "But now we have been released from the law as a marriage counselor, through having died to that by which we were bound (the 1st marriage to the OSN]); that we might serve in a new marriage by the Spirit, not in oldness of letter (the Mosaic Law)."
