In our verse by verse study of Roman we are in Rom 7:11; where I want to correct an incorrect statement that I made last time. I was wrong when I said that the Greek word "lambano" was not translated in the KJV and NASB. It is there and it is translated "take" in those versions and seize in the NIV and NET. I don't know why I missed seeing that but I did not see it so what I said was wrong.
So far in verse 11 we have "for the sin nature (taking or seizing) opportunity through the commandment deceived me..."
The deception includes the fact that marriage to the sin nature from physical birth means we are spiritually dead to God. Before man can be alive to God he must be dead, divorced or separated from the old sin nature that remains in us and very much active in us for our entire physical life.
This death or separation is positionally accomplished at salvation through the baptism of the Holy Spirit and retroactive positional truth when we believe in Jesus Christ. It is experientially accomplished when we acquire the mind of Christ through the PMA of God's Word of truth under the teaching ministry of God the Holy Spirit after we believe in Jesus Christ.
Man is deceived by the old sin nature's trends toward human good and evil into the delusion that the old sin nature can actually produce something that is pleasing to God through some system of human good production.
The old sin nature's inciting of the production of human good and evil deludes the entire human race into thinking that lust and gratification of that lust is justified.
This is the predicate for every system of human good and evil, including religion and religiosity, socialism, the welfare state, communism, and all of the Marxist theories.
While people think that they are accomplishing the greater good for the greater number of people they are reality creating evil to satisfy their lust patterns and as a result they serve satan as the ruler of this world.
This religious rationalism is the basis for the terrible evils that have come into existence in contemporary history. Human good is a deception, a delusion, and a rationalization that is the function of the lust patterns of the old sin nature.
The tenth commandment keeps on warning us not lust. But the old sin nature counters by insisting that it is justifiable to lust in order to establish a new world order. Even the though the new world order is actually a system of lust that is based on human good and evil.
The so called new world order of socialism, Marxism, and communism, is inspired by satan himself as the ruler of this world as a desirable objective for the old sin nature as the ruler of biological human life.
"and through it killed me" - the connective use of the conjunction "kai" (and), and the prepositional phrase "dia" (by or through) plus the genitive of the intensive pronoun "autos" (it): "and through it killed (me)."
This is the attributive use of the intensive pronoun "autos" (it) that means through the same tenth commandment. Plus the aorist active indicative from the verb "apoktino" (kill), describing the killing of a sacrifice or depriving a person of either natural life or spiritual life. Here it means to destroy or to annihilate.
The aorist tense is a constantive aorist that gathers together into one entirety the function of the old sin nature in breaking through the authority of the Mosaic Law to set up its rationalizations.
The old sin nature misrepresents spiritual death as hopeless and without solution that is the greatest issue in history. Man always thinks there is a solution to everything apart from God, so that is the delusion set up by the old sin nature.
The active voice: the old sin nature distorts the 10th commandment into a system of human good, rejects God's authority and continues to rule biological human life through spiritual death.
The OSN is the corrupting influence in life. The indicative mood is the reality of the old sin nature ruling through spiritual death from the moment of physical birth.
The sovereignty over human life is established as an authority for sin, human good, and evil through the imputation of Adam's original sin to the genetically formed old sin nature at physical birth.
This authority operates as the evil authority in opposition to God's righteous authority.
The old sin nature misrepresents spiritual death as hopeless and without solution. The old sin nature alleges that God's justice is the enemy of the human race because of His perfect righteousness and justice but in reality it is God's justice that it is the only source of true blessing for the human race first through condemnation, and then through blessing by grace through faith in Jesus Christ.
Condemnation must precede justification and salvation. Without condemnation from God's justice there can be no justification from God's justice. Condemnation is necessary for the establishment of the grace pipeline at salvation.
There was no grace for the human race until after there was condemnation.
So the first husband, the OSN, uses the Mosaic Law to distort the truth about God to keep the wife, that corresponds to the entire human race, under its rule. Remember that the old sin nature is the sovereign of biological human life and rules through spiritual death from physical birth.
Expanded Translation Rom 7:11; "For the sin nature, having seized the opportunity through the commandment, deceived me, and through it (the 10th commandment) killed me."
Rom 7:12; tells us that the law is not the source of the deception. "So then indeed the law is holy." The conjunction "hoste" (therefore) introduces an independent clause that references back to the previous clause.
The Attic Greek affirmative particle "men" (indeed or in fact) follows. It is used as an emphatic conjunction that is translated "So that indeed." Then the subject, the nominative singular of "nomos" (Law), with the definite article "ho" (the) making it monadic so it is specifically describing the entire Mosaic Law, that is the marriage counselor for the first marriage.
A good translation: "As a matter of fact, indeed, the law...." Then the verb (to be) is missing but implied followed by the predicate nominative singular of "hagios" (holy). "The Law holy" is translated "The Law is holy."
What reveals the existence of the old sin nature is not itself sin it is holy. "and the commandment" he adjunctive use of the conjunction "kai" (and) could be translated "also."
Then the nominative singular subject "entole"(commandment) with the definite article "ho" (the) specifically referencing the 10th commandment of Exod 20:17. This is a reference to how Paul had discovered the existence of the old sin nature.
Rom 7:12; Then comes three predicate nominatives, translated "holy, righteous, and good." The first, "hagios" (holy) again, has a slightly different meaning here. It emphasizes the fact that the Mosaic Law including the 10th commandment originate from God.
God is perfect, so the Mosaic Law that God wrote down is perfect. God delivered the Law in order to fulfill a specific objective. It is not the answer to everything; it is designed for a specialized purpose. The use of the word "holy" the second time refers to the fact that it is perfect within the context of what God designed it to do.
Then a predicate nominative singular from "dikaios" (righteous), that means righteousness as a characteristic of a judge. It means perfect righteousness. So we have the fact that the commandment is holy and perfect righteousness, so the law is fair and the commandment is fair.
The Mosaic Law is a system of integrity. The Mosaic Law comes from God. God is perfect integrity, and whatever comes from God reflects that perfect integrity but it reflects that integrity on a specific limited scale.
Like a flashlight for example. The purpose of a flashlight is not to illuminate everything it only illuminates in a specific direction where it is pointed.
The law has a limited purpose so it cannot be used for everything because it is only designed to go in one direction. One of those directions is perfect righteousness, and our understanding of the Mosaic Law makes us realize our lack of God's perfect righteousness and integrity.
Next is the predicate nominative from "agathos" (good of intrinsic value), the absolute good. These are three characteristics of the 10th commandment as a part of the Mosaic Law.
These characteristics not only apply to the 10th commandment but they also apply to the entire Mosaic Law.
Expanded Translation Rom 7:12;"As a matter of fact, therefore, the law is holy, also the commandment [10th] is holy, and perfect righteousness, and absolute good."
This verse concludes that the law is not the culprit. The law is the marriage counselor of the first marriage. There is nothing wrong with the marriage counselor in pointing out a bad marriage.
In fact, the law does a perfect job of stating the problem and in pointing to Jesus Christ as the solution through the God's ritual plan of sacrifices and Holy Days.
Because the law as a marriage counselor reveals the problem of spiritual death it does not follow that the law caused spiritual death. It is not the Law who is condemning; it is God who is condemning.
The Law is simply what God uses to reveal the condemnation every naturally born physical human being.
Because the law as a marriage counselor reveals that the first husband is sinful it does not mean that the law is sinful. The fact is that man is sinful because he possesses the sin nature from birth. Man is spiritually dead because God imputes Adam's sin to that sin nature at physical birth.
It is the first husband, the old sin nature, that is sinful, not the Mosaic Law functioning as the marriage counselor. Mankind is sinful because he possesses the old sin nature, not because the law says he is sinful, Rom 3:20.
The law is not sinful because it exposes the old sin nature, or personal sin. The law fulfils its purpose perfectly by revealing both the problem and the solution for every naturally born biological human person.
