In our verse by verse study of Romans last time we finished our Expanded Translation of Rom 7:16; "Now if I keep doing this thing that I do not desire to do, I agree with the law that it is noble."

We noted that this verse explains that a standard of reference is necessary to break through the enigma of contradictions in the life of the unbeliever who has to make a choice between the old sin nature and the Lord Jesus Christ. In the unbeliever the battle is engaged between the old sin nature and God the Holy Spirit, the new marriage counselor using the Mosaic Law as the standard of reference.

The standard of reference that draws the distinction between them is the Mosaic Law that is marriage counselor of the marriage to the sin nature at biological human birth.

The emphasis is placed on the 10 commandments that reveal the problem of the first marriage to the OSN, and the ritual plan that emphasizes the solution of salvation by believing in Jesus Christ that provides forgiveness of sins and God's righteousness imputed that fixes the problem of the relationship to the OSN

Once the solution of faith in Jesus Christ has been accepted the battle between the two husbands begins. There is no battle as long as there is only one husband, but retroactive positional truth divorces believers from the old sin nature, the first husband, and simultaneously marries us to Jesus Christ, the second husband, through the baptism of the Spirit that results in irrevocable current positional truth.

In this battle we have God the Holy Spirit as a new marriage counselor but there was never any disagreement with the information that comes from of the old marriage counselor, the Mosaic Law.

We still recognize that the Mosaic Law is from God so it is perfect, having a perfect design even though it is has a limited function but in that specific application it is perfect.

The information the Mosaic Law provides about sin, human good, and evil is correct and accurate and so the remedy of believing in Jesus for salvation.

Therefore we do not reject the standards of the Law under the ministry of the Holy Spirit, but we use these standards to define the sin we must acknowledge to God and to alert us with regard to human good and evil as a part of the assault of the sin nature in its war against God's Word of truth.

So when the believer keeps sinning or succumbs to human good and evil he recognizes the nobility and the advantage of the Mosaic Law in revealing the fact that he is doing what he does not want to do.

God the Holy Spirit as the new marriage counselor uses the standard of reference of the Mosaic Law to define sinfulness for the purpose of rebound and to define human good and evil that must be avoided through rejection and separation.

The Mosaic Law also defines the principles of Divine Establishment that restrain both human good and evil. Patriotism is a legitimate Christian function under Divine Establishment, but socialism, communism, and the welfare state that are rooted in the sins of covetousness, jealousy and envy are the basis of the human good and evil that the sin nature promotes are satan the devil's policies for his rule over fallen mankind.

The establishment code of the Mosaic Law that include freedom, marriage, family, and nationalism continue to relate the believer to Divine Establishment provide the information that is necessary to reject and separate from the sin nature's lies regarding human good and evil.

When the believer sins from his own volition after he is saved he is doing something incompatible with his new marriage to Jesus Christ so he is doing something he does not desire to do.

Therefore, he agrees to the advantage of the Law in defining sin, and he also agrees to the advantage of the Law in defining establishment, so that the trends of the old sin nature can be rejected through the power of the filling ministry of God the Holy Spirit.

Therefore the law is advantageous to the believer even though the Mosaic Law is no longer the marriage counselor for the believer in Jesus Christ.

Rom 7:17; "But now it is no longer me doing it." The first word is the adverb of time, "nuni" (now). When this is combined with the postpositive particle "de" (but) it becomes an idiom that is translated, "But now."

It could be translated "But now as the case really stands." The next two words are "ouketi ego". "Ouketi" (no longer) is used logically rather than temporally so it means "no longer" plus the nominative singular subject "ego" (I or me).

Next is the present active indicative of "katergazomai" (to do, achieve, to accomplish, to work out, or perform). In this case we will translate it "perform." This is an iterative present that describes events that repeatedly recur at successive intervals.

The middle voice of the deponent verb functions in the active voice. Paul uses himself to represent the activity of the human race under the control of the sin nature. The indicative mood is declarative representing the verb form from the viewpoint of reality.

The accusative neuter singular direct object from the intensive pronoun "autos" (the same is attributive "But as the case really stands I am no longer performing the same (sin human, good, and evil)."

The attributive use of the intensive pronoun "autos" refers to the trends of the OSN. This does not imply lack of cooperation or failure to use one's own personal volition in the matter of sin, human good, and evil because we never produce these activities without choosing to do them with our own volition because we want to do it.

Paul is dramatizing the conflict between the ex-husband, the OSN, and the present husband, the Lord Jesus Christ with emphasis on the believer in the analogy. And in the analogy the believer corresponds to the wife.

This emphasizes how a believer with maximum doctrine resident in his soul understands the problem, and on the one hand honors doctrine and on the other hand renounces and rejects the ex-husband, the OSN.

That explains that the more doctrine we learn and understand the more we can avoid sin, human good, and evil.

No one ever commits a sin, known or unknown, without involvement of his own volition. Two things are involved: lust (from OSN) and our volition. Paul is not denying the involvement of his volition but he is renouncing the lust patterns of the old sin nature as the ex-husband.

Because of the OSN the believer is not the master of his inner temptations so a requirement exists for God the Holy Spirit as the marriage counselor for the second marriage to Jesus Christ.

The filling and teaching ministries of God the Holy Spirit enable the believer's volition to choose to make decisions that please the Lord Jesus Christ rather than the old sin nature.

While volition is involved for the performance of sin, good, and evil, volition is not the source of the desire to do these things the OSN is. Only the filling of the Spirit and the thinking of Christ resident in the soul's stream of consciousness can offset the intensity of the influence of the OSN's solicitation to commit sin, human good, and evil.

"but the sin that resides in me" this is not referring to personal sins; it is referring to the old sin nature. The adversative conjunction "allla" (but) sets up the contrast between the previous clause and this one.

Then the culprit of the first marriage, the nominative singular subject of "hamartia" (sin) with the generic use of the definite article "ho" (the) making it monadic so it exclusively describes the old sin nature, the ex-husband.

Plus the present active participle of "enoikeo" (en = in; oikeo = dwell), that means to inhabit, indwell or reside. It can also be translated "living." It means to dwell in, reside in or to live in "but the sin nature that keeps on residing in me."

The present tense is retroactive progressive present that describes what began in the past, at physical birth, and continues into the present time. The OSN continues to live inside of each one of us after salvation.

The active voice: the OSN produces the action of the verb after salvation. The participle is circumstantial. With this is the prepositional phrase "en" (in) plus the locative plural of the personal pronoun "ego" (me).

Expanded Translation Rom 7:17; "But as the case really stands, I am no longer performing the same [sin, good, evil], but the sin nature which keeps on indwelling me."

This is why the believer does and must also have the presence of God the Holy Spirit, the marriage counselor, and the Lord Jesus Christ for the purpose of fellowship indwelling residing, or living in their body after salvation.

Our marriage is union with Christ through the baptism of the Spirit. The indwelling of Christ is only functional for the believer who is filled with the spirit from their positive volition to keep on being filled with the spirit so they can recall and apply the thinking of Christ that they have learned.

We see from this that the inner conflict of the believer and the pressure on the volition of God's royal family becomes obvious. We have the pressure of inner conflict, the pressure of desiring to please the Lord, but we are not pleasing Him because of what we are doing, but we are cognizant of what we are doing that not pleasing to Him.

Inside of every believer is the old sin nature that propagandizes, solicits and seduces the believer toward sin, human good, and evil.

At the same time ever since the believer was saved the Lord Jesus Christ, the second husband along with God the Holy Spirit, the marriage counselor of the second marriage is also residing in the believer because both Jesus Christ, the second husband, and God the Holy Spirit, the new marriage counselor, indwell the body of the believer.

For the believer to understand this Bible doctrine must also be resident and circulating in the believer's stream of consciousness from the communication of God's Word by the Holy Spirit through the human spirit into the believer's soul.

God's word is built up in the believer's soul through the human spirit as believer advances to spiritual maturity from their PMA of the thinking of Christ that is God's Word of Truth under the teaching ministry of God the Holy Spirit.

The attack of the OSN, the former husband, emphasizes the source of the conflict and the cause of the seduction and deception of human volition through propaganda, lies and deceit and lusts of the OSN.

Rom 7:18; "For I know that in me" begins with the postpositive conjunctive particle "gar" (for) used in the inferential connotation that can be translated as "for" or "in fact," or "certainly." Plus the perfect active indicative of the verb "oida" (to know) used to describe some form of cognizance.
