The book of Romans part 297;The Mosaic Law

In our verse-by-verse study of Romans we are between chapters 7 and 8 where we have taken up some topical studies on the subjects that Paul is developing. We are presently working on the doctrine of the Mosaic Law,

Last time we noted that God's protocol plan for the church takes its precedence from the Law of Christ in dispensation of the Hypostatic Union not from the Mosaic Law in the dispensation of Israel.

This means that precedence for God's protocol plan is not taken from any of the commandments of the Mosaic Law, whether tithing, Sabbath or Holy Day observance, or the keeping the ten commandments.

Faith in Jesus Christ not only provides everlasting life but it is also the source of God's irrevocable imputed righteousness that is the end of self righteousness and works righteousness that comes from misapplication of the Mosaic Law.

Neither self-righteousness nor works righteousness can ever improve on God's imputed righteousness that was given to us at the moment we believed in Jesus Christ.

God's imputed righteousness is not only the basis of justification but it is also the predicate for logistical grace support and blessing from God's justice and it is also the predicate for God's personal love for every believer in Jesus Christ.

God's protocol plan that is revealed in the mystery doctrine for the church was never revealed to Old Testament writers. Not one word regarding God's policies for and the uniqueness of the Church Age is found in the Old Testament because it was hidden, Rom 16:25-26; Eph 3:1-6; Col 1:25-26.

Our Lord Jesus Christ completely fulfilled the Mosaic Law and it has been rescinded. That means that God's protocol plan for believers in the Church Age can never take its precedence from something that has been completely rescinded.

God's plan for Israel is not the precedence for the Church so the Mosaic Law has nothing to do with the Christian way of life. In fact within God's decree the function of Israel and the Church are mutually exclusive.

That means that the Mosaic Law has nothing to do with the Church. The reason believers think they need the Law is because they are not taught how to be filled with the Spirit.

It is God's power from the filling ministry of God the Holy Spirit not the human power of keeping the Mosaic Law that defeats the sin nature.

After the Church started on Pentecost 30AD any Jew who believed in Jesus Christ spiritually became part of the church that superceded their function as Israel.

God provided establishment principles for the Gentiles in the previous dispensations long before He provided the Mosaic Law in the dispensation of Israel so God also provides establishment principles for the Church Age after He rescinded the Mosaic Law.

God's protocol plan for the Church Age supercedes God's ritual plan for Israel. Precedence for God's protocol plan is derived exclusively from Jesus Christ in the dispensation of the Hypostatic Union.

Many denominations do not understand this so they include the Mosaic Law as a major part of the Christian way of life but by doing that without the filling of the Spirit they are only building the wood, hay and straw from the dead works of human good.

Both Romans and Galatians repudiate the idea of the Mosaic Law being part of the Christian way of life.

Legalism, such as tithing, Sabbath observance, the substitution of morality for spirituality, originate from the erroneous premise that the Mosaic Law is a part of or the predicate for the Christian way of life.

Neither salvation nor spirituality is related to keeping the commandments of the Mosaic Law.

The substitutionary spiritual death of Jesus Christ on the cross completely fulfilled codex two of the Mosaic Law. The resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead is the basis for a God's royal family that is comprised of the new spiritual species that utilizes the power of God the Holy Spirit to function in God's protocol plan.

This means that God's protocol plan pioneered by Jesus and the ritual plan of the Mosaic Law for Israel are mutually exclusive.

All precedence for God's protocol plan is based on God's omnipotent power that raised Jesus Christ from the dead. This completely excludes the Mosaic Law. The Law cannot provide spirituality, and neither can it provide resurrection.

The Mosaic Law provides neither precedence nor authorization for God's protocol plan for the Church Age. All doctrine related to the function of the Church is classified as mystery doctrine that was hidden from the Old Testament writers, Rom 16:25-26; Eph 3:2-6; Col 1:25-27.

Sincere uninformed people who have not been taught accurate doctrine often use the Mosaic Law as the basis for legalism. God's Word explains that this is invalid and strictly forbids it. One such passage is Heb 7:19; "For the Law accomplished nothing, but on the other hand the bringing in of a better hope did, through which (hope) we draw near to God."

The aorist active indicative of the Greek verb "teleioo," means to accomplish, finish or complete, plus the negative adverb "ouden", that means nothing, indicates that in the past the Law accomplished nothing because of Israel's negative volition.

The Jews took the Law and tried to use it as a system of salvation but nothing was accomplished so they were not saved. The rich young ruler who could not be saved by his works illustrates this. Those who were saved were those like Abraham who were saved by faith and faith alone.

"The bringing in "epeisagogue" began on Christmas with the virgin birth. Faith in Jesus Christ was a better hope than keeping the Mosaic Law for salvation because it actually worked.

"Drawing near" is a synonym for having faith in Jesus Christ. The legalism of salvation by keeping the Law represents all systems of salvation by works. There are three categories of salvation by works.

Salvation by works alone is trying to be saved by some system of works.
Titus 3:5, "He saved us, not on the basis of works which we have done in righteousness, but on the basis of His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and the renewing of the Holy Spirit."

Eph 2:8-9, "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this (salvation) is not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, lest any man should boast."

Salvation by faith plus works includes such things as faith plus commitment, or lordship, or repentance, or water baptism, or emotion, or psychological activity.

A spiritually dead person cannot make a commitment to God and cannot recognize Jesus' lordship. The feelings, emotions and psychological activity of a spiritually dead person is dead to God.

Salvation by works without faith includes inviting Christ into your heart. Jer 17:9, "The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked; who can know it."

We don't invite Christ anywhere as spiritually dead creatures. The faith of a spiritually dead person is the only thing the Holy Spirit can take and make effective for salvation. God invites us to believe in Jesus Christ; we don't invite Christ anywhere.

Inviting Christ into your life. You are spiritually dead; that is inviting Christ into a tomb. John 16;8; "He will convict the world concerning sin because they do not believe in Me." The convicting ministry of the Holy Spirit has nothing to do with inviting Christ anywhere, or with how you feel about anything.

Gal 1:1; "Paul, an apostle (not sent from men, not through the agency of man, but through Jesus Christ, and God the Father, who raised Him from the dead),

v2 and all the brethren who are with me, to the churches of Galatia:

v3 Grace to you and prosperity from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ,

v4 who gave Himself a substitute for our sins, in order that He might deliver us from this present evil age, on the basis of the will of God, even the Father,

v5 to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.

v6 I am amazed that you have so quickly deserted Him who called you by means of the grace of Christ to another Gospel (the Mosaic Law)."

The book of Galatians deals with legalism at salvation and legalism in the Christian way of life. The Galatians had become legalistic, self-righteous, very pious, and very inflexible in their moral degeneracy.

The spiritual freedom of the Church exceeds any freedom defined by the Mosaic Law The best the Mosaic Law could do was to define human freedom in terms of morality.

Never before in history has so much freedom, privilege, opportunity and equality been given to believers as in the dispensation of the royal family of God.
Never have such objectives been given to every believer as in the Church Age; objectives that exceed any objective ever stated in the Mosaic Law.

John 1:17, "The Law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ."

The Mosaic Law as a total code has been annulled. Only what has been restated in the New Testament is pertinent to the Christian way of life, as the law of Christ, as the law of the Spirit in Christ Jesus.

Though annulled as a code and not part of God's protocol plan for the Church Age believer, the Mosaic Law has a definite purpose for the unbeliever.

Though annulled as a code and not part of God's protocol plan, the Mosaic Law is still part of the canon of Scripture.

The annulment of the Mosaic Law does not mean cancellation from Scripture because the Law is a teacher of sin and it reflects God's perfect standards so it is a tutor that leads us to Christ.

The Mosaic Law has a pre-salvation function in the unbeliever. Rom 3:19-20; "Now we know that whatever the Law says, it speaks to those who are under the Law, that every mouth may be closed, and all the world may be accountable to God; because by the works of the Law no flesh shall be justified in His sight; for by the Law is the knowledge of sin."

1Tim 1:9-10; "Realizing this fact that the Law was not made for a righteous man, but for those who are lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who murder their fathers and mothers, for murderers in general, for fornicators and homosexuals, for kidnappers and liars and perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound doctrine."

The Mosaic Law defines sin primarily for the unbeliever, but it also defines it for the believer as well. Gal 3:24-26, "Therefore what is the purpose of the Law? It has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer under the tutor. For you are all the sons of God by faith in Christ Jesus."

The purpose of the Law for the unbeliever is to reveal sin, but not to remove it, to reveal sin, but not to prevent it, to prove that all human beings are sinners, but it was not a standard that could be used for proving yourself as being righteous.

The Law was added because of transgressions, Gal 3:19. Though the Law was ordained to life, it is a sentence to death, Rom 7:10. Therefore, the Law is a minister of condemnation, and not of spirituality, 2 Cor 3:9.

The Law is a minister of spiritual death, 2 Cor 3:7. The Law was not made for a righteous man (the believer because he has God's imputed righteousness), 1 Tim 1:9.

The believer is not under the Law because it is not a part of the Christian way of life, John 1:16-17; Rom 7:4-6; Eph 2:15; Gal 3:19-25; 2Cor 3:7-13; Col 2:14; Rom 6:14; Gal 5:18.

No one can be justified by the works which the Law demands, Acts 13:39; Rom 3:20-23; Gal 2:16, 3:10.

The Mosaic Law defines the enmity between God and man. The enmity between God and man is based on that part of the Mosaic Law that describes and defines man's sinfulness.

This is illustrated in 1Tim 1:8-11. "But we know that the Law is good if one uses it lawfully.

v9 Knowing this fact, that the Law was not made for a righteous person, but for those who are lawless and rebellious (rejecters of authority), for ungodly persons and sinners (unbelievers), for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for murderers (in general)

v10 and fornicators, for homosexuals and kidnappers, for liars and perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound doctrine,

v11 according to the glorious Gospel of the blessed God, with which I have been entrusted."

The Mosaic Law was and still is the best description of authority.

Keeping the Law is not a way of salvation, Gal 2:16. The Mosaic Law reveals Jesus Christ as the way of salvation.

The Mosaic Law is the way of human freedom and integrity by adjustment to God's justice, and the way of prosperity under establishment, Rom 3:20, 28. The Law reveals the problem of spiritual death and the solution.

Keeping the Law is not spirituality, 1 Cor 13; Rom 8:2-4; Gal 5:18, 22-23. There is a contrast between God the Holy Spirit and the Mosaic Law. The filling ministry of God the Holy Spirit supercedes the protocols of the Mosaic Law so God's Royal Family, the church, is never under the Law.
