We are in a topical study on the doctrine of the heart of the soul in our study of Romans.
When we stopped last time we were noting the memory center where Bible doctrine is circulated into the various compartments of the right lobe (the heart) producing recall. You associate things in your frame of reference and then remember them by correlating them in the memory center. The memory center stores doctrine as long-term memory after a lot of repetition.
Recall is the beginning point of the application of Bible doctrine to experience so it is the start of the development of wisdom (sophia).
Recall is the basis for the function of all ten of the problem solving devices: rebound, the filling of the Spirit, the faith-rest drill, grace orientation, doctrinal orientation, a personal sense of destiny, personal love for God the Father, impersonal love for all mankind, sharing the happiness of God, and occupation with Christ.
Recall is also the basis fort he deployment of problem solving devices. It may take only one verse, such as the recall of 1John 1:9, for the problem-solving device of rebound to be deployed.
Rebound must be kept simple because we sin so often that we need a very simple remedy. Rebound as the solution relates our specific personal sin to God the Father's judgment of every personal sin in human history to Jesus Christ on the cross that makes it possible for God to forgive them without compromising His perfect righteousness.
More complex recall occurs after we learn and understand how we fit into God's protocol plan, what the portfolio of invisible assets provides for us, how the unique spiritual life works, how suffering for blessing works, that leads us to a lifestyle of the application of God Word of Truth or wisdom.
Recall is the basis for the function of the stages of the faith-rest drill that is the application of the doctrinal rationales to the circumstances of life.
The doctrinal rationales include the essence of God rationale, the plan of God rationale, the spiritual privilege or politeuma rationale, the grace of God rationale, and the logistical grace rationale.
Recall is not dependent on having a good natural human memory. It has everything to do with the inculcation of doctrinal teaching under the ministry of God the Holy Spirit. You must hear a doctrine taught hundreds of times. The more you hear a doctrine taught the faster you will be able to remember and apply it.
You haven't really learned a doctrine until you can't forget it and you cannot use what you cannot remember. You don't have time to look up the doctrine in your notebook when you're being tested. It must already be resident in your thinking. That means you can only apply what you can't forget because you must be able to apply it at a moment's notice.
Therefore, recall is the application of epignosis doctrine in the right lobe to the circumstances of life. When epignosis doctrine is applied, it is called wisdom (sophia).
Lam 3:20-24, "Surely my soul remembers and is humbled within me. This doctrine I recall to my mind, therefore I have confidence. The Lord's grace support never ceases; His grace expressions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness. `The Lord is my portion,' says my soul (frame of reference and memory center); `therefore I have confidence in Him.'"
What is the memory that brings about humility as the basis of our function in the spiritual life? Verse 21 answers: The recall of God's Word of Truth. We see here that Jeremiah had both doctrinal orientation and grace orientation.
Psa 119:6, "I delight in doctrine; I shall not forget Your word." Psalm 119 was the thinking of the young Jewish people on the long march from Jerusalem to Babylon as they were being treated terribly and abused. They had learned the doctrine and they were able to recall it under the worst of circumstances.
Psa 119:109, "My life is in constant danger, but I do not forget Your doctrines." Doctrine in the frame of reference and the memory center is available for instant recall.
2Cor 10:4-6. The context of this passage is the angelic conflict, and the issue is the believer's weapons in that war. You must have the right weapons. You come to Bible class to become spiritually armed and dangerous to the propaganda and lies that are the fortresses that are promoted as truth in satan's cosmic system.
God provides the weapons that are all contained in one arsenal: God's spiritual power system. The phrase "ready to punish" in verse six refers to epignosis doctrine in the frame of reference and in the memory center that is ready to be recalled and deployed against satan's lies.
This brings us to the next compartment in the soul, the vocabulary storage compartment that is the place where thinking is developed and where technical words are used to develop new ideas. Information is conveyed with words so people cannot think beyond their vocabulary.
Vocabulary is developed in the left lobe (the mind) and only transferred to the right lobe (the heart) when accepted. Often our capacity for life is related to our vocabulary.
Concepts are first learned in the left lobe (the mind) where they cannot be deployed until after we accept them as being true and they are transferred to the right lobe (the heart) by God the Holy Spirit for application.
After salvation, the believer must learn an entirely new technical spiritual vocabulary, including learning technical theological words similar to learning a new language for thinking, for application, and for the expression of God's Word.
Just as at physical birth a baby must learn a language and the meaning of words to understand and communicate so after regeneration the new believer as a member of God's new spiritual species must learn an entirely new spiritual language that has its own vocabulary for explaining spiritual concepts.
Technical language is necessary to understand and apply any subject especially Bible doctrine because God's plan is revealed and explained in technical, theological terms.
Jer 15:16, "Your words were found and I ate (metabolized) them, and Your words became for me joy (happiness)."
Deut 8:3, "And He humbled you (the Exodus generation) and He let you be hungry and He fed you with manna which you did not know, nor did your ancestors know that He might cause you to understand that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that proceeds from the month of God." Quoted by Jesus in Matt 4:4;
Categorical doctrinal storage is the next compartment in the heart that when coordinated with the frame of reference classifies Bible doctrine. This is the storage area for technical concepts or categorical information in any area of life.
It is related to recall from the memory center and the vocabulary. You remember the principles with their technical words, and when you put them all together you begin to understand them.
By comparing Scripture with Scripture, certain subjects are brought together in the divisions of doctrine for the purpose of classification. In God's Word many ideas are covered from different viewpoints but they are still part of the same subject.
This means that categorical storage fulfills the objective of cognitive independence because categories are fundamental concepts of doctrine that all doctrinal knowledge can be reduced in to.
Categories are the divisions of doctrine formed for the purpose of classification of subjects in God's Word of Truth.
Categorical storage is the basis for conceptualism in the post- salvation renovation of the thinking from the perception, metabolization, and application of Bible doctrine under the teaching ministry of God the Holy Spirit.
Both vocabulary and categorical storage are essential for the spiritual growth that is required for the believer to implement God's plan.
Prov 2:2, "Make your ear to concentrate on wisdom; apply your right lobe (heart) to understanding." Only you can make your ear concentrate; no one can do it for you.
You are to concentrate on wisdom, that in the Hebrew is called "chakmah." Chakmah is a Hebrew word that combines the concepts from the Greek words "epignosis" and "sophia." Wisdom is the basis of spiritual growth.
Wisdom is the combination of epignosis entering into your right lobe after you believe it that is followed by application from your right lobe as sophia. When you apply your right lobe to understanding, you develop categorical storage.
The heart pumps epignosis doctrine through the frame of reference, memory center, vocabulary and categorical storage compartments. Without concentration and positive volition to what is being taught, you will not develop the vocabulary or categorical storage necessary to understand doctrinal information.
Prov 2:10; "Wisdom will enter your heart, and the knowledge of doctrine will be pleasant to your soul." Prov 3:3.There is no wisdom until the information that is understood enters into the right lobe and is believed as truth for it to be written on the tablet of your heart.
"Pleasant" refers to the effect of the problem solving devices in your soul as you become spiritually self-sustaining.
Prov 15:14-15, "The mind of the intelligent seeks knowledge; ... a good heart has a continual feast."
Prov 18:15, "The heart of the wise acquires knowledge of doctrine; the ear of the wise seeks knowledge of doctrine."
The "ear of the wise" is positive volition. With positive volition God the Holy Spirit makes everything fall into place. Positive volition seeks doctrine continuously.
The "heart of the wise" is spiritual growth that acquires knowledge through the teaching ministry of God the Holy Spirit.
Categorical storage is where words are connected together into sentences, sentences into paragraphs, paragraphs into chapters, chapters into books and books into libraries. It is cognizance of the various doctrinal categories that God uses communicate spiritual information to the believer.
Knowledge is built on knowledge. Simple categories of doctrine lead to the more complex categories of knowledge in the classification of Biblical information.
The study of doctrine categorically becomes the basis for more and more application. It is very easy to mix the promises with faith in the simple form of the faith-rest drill. But to take a complicated problem-solving device in your life and apply various concepts and rationales of Bible doctrine to it requires a greater use of the thinking in your heart.
Eventually, the greatest problem solving devices are developed in spiritual adulthood by categorical application. In the faith-rest drill, instead of claiming a promise, you begin to claim entire doctrinal rationales. It is from categories that you develop the capacity to deploy more powerful applications of doctrine to your experience.
Both vocabulary and categorical storage are essential for the renovation of the thinking. Cognition of a technical vocabulary of Biblical information is necessary for the fulfillment of God's protocol plan. It can only be explained in terms of spiritual mechanics. Therefore a technical spiritual vocabulary is necessary.
Every term, including rebound, faith-rest drill, hope, spiritual self-esteem, virtue-love as a problem solving device, God's protocol plan, the operational-type divine power system, the portfolio of invisible assets, escrow blessings, logistical grace blessings, imputation, justification, sanctification, glorification, election, and predestination all have extensive doctrinal explanations. They must all be stored in both the vocabulary and categorical compartments of the soul's heart for application.
The next compartment in the heart of the soul that we will look at is the conscience.
