Romans chapter 8 describes "The new life" that is referenced in Rom 6:4. The principle is that God's plan for the believer is greater than any condemnation, any sin, any failure, any personal suffering or adversity, any historical disaster, or any problem of life.
The new life is greater than anything on the earth. In other words, by the intake of God's Word of Truth on a consistent basis we have something that is infinitely superior to human life, and we stay above human life and on top of human life, and human life never crushes us, destroys us, or breaks us. We may bend but we never break. That is the principle that is presented in this chapter.
An outline for chapter 8: Verses 1-17 The new life in sanctification; Verses 18-30; The new life and suffering; verses 31-39; The new life and its challenges.
The first verse starts out with the results of positional sanctification so before we start it we will briefly review the doctrine or positional sanctification.
The mechanics for positional truth: the baptism of the Spirit. God the Holy Spirit takes every believer at the point of salvation and enters him into union with Jesus Christ, 1Cor 12:13; Acts 1:5; Eph 4:5; John 14:20.
Positional truth belongs to all believers, those who are generally filled with the spirit and those who are not because all believers have the same security, 1Cor 1:2,30.
Positional truth protects the believer from God's judgment in eternity, Romans 8:1.
Positional truth qualifies the believer to live with Christ forever. To live with God forever you have to have two things that come exclusively from God. God has perfect righteousness and cannot tolerate anything but perfect righteousness. Jesus Christ has God's righteousness when the believer enters into union with Christ; he shares God's righteousness, 2Cor 5:21.
God has eternal life. If you are going to have fellowship with God forever you have to have eternal life. Jesus Christ is eternal life. The moment you accept Christ as savior you enter into union with Christ, you have eternal life. John 3:16;
Positional truth qualifies you to live with God forever and ever because it gives you eternal life, 1 John 5:11,12; and the imputation of God's perfect righteousness, 2 Corinthians 5:21.
Positional truth also explains election and predestination. Election and predestination are two ways of describing God's plan for believers in their association with Jesus Christ.
In eternity past Jesus Christ was elected so He has a destiny. When you are entered into union with Christ you share the election of Christ so you share the destiny of Christ. In sharing the destiny of Christ you are predestinated as part of God's plan forever.
Election and predestination are explained on the basis of positional truth, they are the basis of your security, Eph 1:3-6. Positional sanctification produces a new creature in Christ, 2 Cor 5:17 and guarantees the eternal security of the believer, Rom 8:38,39.
Positional truth exists in two categories. Retroactive positional truth is found in Romans 6 and Col 2:12; 3:3. In retroactive positional truth the believer is identified with Christ in His death.
When Christ died on the cross He died spiritually when He bore our sins. The first Adam died spiritually immediately when he ate the forbidden fruit. All of the naturally born children of Adam are born in spiritual death with an old sin nature.
We do not die spiritually because we are already born spiritually dead, Rom 5:12. Jesus Christ went to the cross as the last Adam to solve the sin nature and spiritual death problem. 1Pet 3:18;
When Jesus, the last Adam, went to the cross, the sins from the old sin nature were poured out on Him and judged and all of the human good that is also produced from the old sin nature was rejected because there is no place in God's perfect plan for imperfect human good.
We are identified with Christ in His death that means human good is rejected and divine good is accepted. Jesus Christ's work on the cross is divine good.
All of our sins have been judged so they are not the issue. Human good has been rejected so that is the issue in retroactive positional truth. We are identified with Christ is His death and we are also identified with Christ in His resurrection life and His ascension.
The implications of current positional truth include the following: We share the righteousness of Christ, 2Cor 5:21. We share His life (eternal life), 1John 5:11,12. We share His destiny Rev 17:14; we share His election, Eph 1:3-6.
We share His sonship, 2Tim 2:1. We share His heirship, Romans 8:16,17. We share His sanctification, 1Cor 1:2,30. We share in His kingdom, He is going to resign forever, 2 Peter 1:11. We share in His priesthood. Christ is a priest forever, Heb 10:10-14.
Positional truth is not something that is experienced physically because the baptism of the Holy Spirit is not an experience. It is neither emotional nor ecstatic, but it is something you possess on the basis of grace. Positional truth is not progressive; it is a reality that can never be improved upon in time or in eternity.
It is not related to human merit or human good. This is the implication of retroactive positional truth; there is never any place in God's plan for human good. God's grace establishes divine good and rejects and excludes human good.
Positional truth is eternal and irrevocable. It will last forever and God, the angels, or man cannot change it Rom 8:38-39;
Positional truth is only perceived and understood on the basis of doctrine from God's Word of Truth and it must be communicated to you, it isn't something you would ever recognize or understand on your own.
Positional truth is completely obtained at the moment of salvation. This is accomplished by means of the baptism of the Spirit it is one of 40 things you receive at the moment you believe in Jesus Christ.
Rom 8:1; the result of positional sanctification. "There is therefore now no condemnation." It begins with the nominative singular adjective "oudeis" the word translated "no," "not," or "never" so it is always a very strong negative.
With that is the inferential and illative particle "ara" that references conclusions from the preceding chapter so it is translated "therefore." Plus the adverb of time, "nun" translated "now" that means now is the time to move out and start advancing.
You have enough information now, and will receive enough briefing in this chapter eight so that there is no longer an excuse for inaction
"Therefore now." Then, since "oudeis" is a nominative singular adjective used as a substantive that emphasizes the negative, it becomes a predicate nominative so it means "There is no."
The Greek word translated "condemnation" is actually mistranslated because condemnation and judgment are two different things. Condemnation is the passing of a sentence and judgment is the execution of a sentence.
This verse is describing the execution of a sentence. God's justice executed a sentence of condemnation on us at the moment of our physical birth through the imputation of Adam's original sin to the genetically formed old sin nature in our biological body that resulted in spiritual death with a sin nature at physical birth.
That is condemnation. So it doesn't make any sense to say there is no condemnation when obviously there is condemnation. We are condemned at biological birth. This is the nominative singular "katakrima," with the predicate nominative "nyn" (now) referring to judgment or punishment that follows a sentence or condemnation.
It means doom or judgment so condemnation is not really the correct word because we were sentenced to be condemned at physical birth by the imputation of Adam's sin, so we were already condemned. So the word is not referring to condemnation, the word is referring to "judgment," and that judgment is to be thrown into the eternal lake of fire.
There is a very large time lapse between condemnation at biological birth and the execution of the judgment in the eternal lake of fire. So the corrected translation is, "Therefore now there is no judgment."
The sentence of condemnation at physical birth is not carried out for those who have believed in Jesus with the result that they have been born again.
Being born again means a new life and that what the verse is referencing. In John 3:18; the words are "is not judged." "to the ones who are in Christ Jesus."
Rom 8:1; next is the dative plural indirect object from the definite article "ho" that used as a demonstrative pronoun to refer to believers in Jesus Christ so it is translated "for those." Plus the preposition "eis" with the locative of the proper nouns "Christo" and "Iesou" (Christ Jesus) so we have " to those who are in Christ Jesus."
Expanded Translation Rom 8:1; "Now therefore there is no judgment to those who are in Christ Jesus."
Rom 8:2; This is a word for word English translation of the Greek with adjustments for the differences between the syntax of the Greek and the English languages.
Expanded Translation Rom 8:2; "For the principle of the Spirit (ministry of the Spirit at salvation) who is the source of eternal life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the principle of the sin nature and resultant spiritual death."
Rom 8:3; This is also a word for word English translation of the Greek with adjustments for the differences between the syntax of the Greek and the English languages.
Rom 8:3 Expanded Translation "For what was impossible from the law, because it was weak through the flesh (OSN and the first marriage), the God by having sent his own Son (the deity of Christ) in the likeness of the flesh of sin (perfect humanity of Christ), and for a sin offering [the work of Christ on the cross], judged the sin nature in the flesh:"
Rom 8:4; refers to the triumph of the believer's second marriage to Jesus Christ. Three principles come into view: 1) If God provides something with a limited purpose (like the Mosaic Law) He also provides something with a complete purpose (like salvation through faith in Christ or spirituality from the filling ministry of God the Holy Spirit after salvation);
2) Verse 4 is a purpose clause that is a continuation of the sentence that began in the previous verse and it is designed to express the triumph of God's imputed righteousness for believers in their post salvation spiritual life while they are still living in their sin infused biological body on the earth in the devil's world.
3) The triumph of imputed righteousness in the advance to spiritual maturity, and the means of that triumph through the filling of the Spirit, is all stated in one purpose clause.
"That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us" the conjunction "hina" plus the subjunctive mood introduces the purpose clause, the final clause that is the objective, purpose or aim of Jesus Christ being sent.
With it is a nominative singular subject "dikaioma" that means requirement or commandment. It refers to a legal act that corresponds to a law or mandate.
In English this refers to the execution of justice. "In order that the legal requirement of the law." The legal requirement of the law is that in order to receive blessing from God you have to be as good as God is, and God is perfect righteousness.
This is a legal requirement that cannot be fulfilled by keeping the Law in the relative righteousness of the energy of the flesh because God's perfect justice can only bless God's perfect righteousness and the energy of the flesh isn't good enough.
