In our verse by verse study we are in the last phrase of Rom 8:12; at the perfective present tense of "zao" (life) that refers to function in accord with the existing results of the positional truth that exists from baptism of the Holy Spirit at salvation.
The active voice: the believer produces the results of no obligation to the OSN and the infinitive of intended results indicates the execution of no obligation to the OSN because the believer is positionally dead to the OSN.
This is also an infinitive in the Greek, with the definite article "ho" (the) that forms an Attic Greek idiom. The definite article "ho" is normally translated "the" but as an infinitive it is translated "that" so we have "that we should live." Plus "kata" (according to) "sarx" (flesh), according to the flesh."
Expanded Translation Rom 8:12; "Therefore, brethren, we are NOT obligated to the old sin nature, that we should live according to the old sin nature."
The negative obligation (NOT) that is used in verse 12 prepares the way for a statement of alternatives that comes in the next verse. Negative obligation implies that we can miss the reason why we continue to live on the earth in the devil's world after salvation so the negative helps to define the positive objectives of the Christian way of life after salvation.
The solution to the problem of the old sin nature is found in each stage of God's plan for mankind. In phase one, the believer at salvation: retroactive positional truth positionally breaks the power and the authority of the OSN.
In phase two, the believer in time: the experiential power of the OSN as the ex-husband is broken through maturity adjustment to God's justice. That involves two adjustments to God's justice: rebound when necessary and a consistent positive attitude toward Bible doctrine for the advance to spiritual maturity.
In phase three, at the believer's resurrection: the OSN is eliminated with the new resurrection body, along with the destruction of all evil in the forms of human good and evil at the judgment seat of Christ.
Both carnality and reversionism ignore this negative obligation to the OSN. Carnality emphasizes the old sin nature's trend toward sin. Carnality is not just the believer's sinning but the sinning believer's failure to rebound. It is failure to utilize God's grace solution for personal sin.
Reversionism is the believer's rejection of God's Word of Truth that results in the believer's involvement in the evil of human good and evil.
The believer is not obligated to the ex-husband, the OSN, to follow its policy of sin, human good, and evil. Having no obligation to the sin nature as the ex-husband frees the believer to follow the grace policy of the new husband, the Lord Jesus Christ.
The grace policy of the Lord Jesus Christ for the believer in time leads to maturity adjustment to God's justice through the filling ministry of God the Spirit and the daily function of GASP.
We see here that good is the exclusive production of the believer who is filled with the spirit and evil is the human good and evil production of the believer who is controlled by the OSN.
That means that from God's perspective for the believer being good or evil is exclusively based on the believer's position it is not based on what the believer does and everything that the unbeliever does is evil.
Rom 8:13; describes the alternatives of the Christian way of life. The verse begins with the first alternative that was prohibited in the previous verse. "For if you live according to the flesh."
The first word is the conditional conjunction "ei" (if) that with the indicative mood verb translated "live" introduces the protasis of a first class condition of "if" that is a supposition from the viewpoint of reality.
The protasis presents a fact that explains that when the believer is under the control of the OSN the believer is either carnal or reversionistic, or both.
The conjunction "gar" (for) is emphatic so it means "indeed." Plus the present active indicative of the verb "zao" (live) that refers to living the Christian life in phase two, the life between salvation and biological death.
The retroactive progressive present tense describes what started in the past and continues into the present. In this case, carnality or reversionism, or both. The active voice: the carnal or reversionistic believer produces the action of the verb. The indicative mood is a statement of fact that sets up the protasis of a first class condition of "if." " If and its assumed as true."
Next we have the phrase "kata"(according to) plus the accusative of "sarx" (flesh) so the first phrase is "Indeed, if you live according to the flesh" or "under the authority of the old sin nature."
This is a first class condition, that is assumed to be true so it assumes that you do. The old sin nature dominates the life of the believer when the believer is carnal, without rebound and left unchecked carnality metastasizes into reversionism and the production of human good and evil.
"You are about to die" the present active indicative of the verb "mello" (destined) is a verb that means to be about to, to be on the verge of doing something, or to be destined. A good translation is: "you are destined."
For the believer who is negative toward God's Word of Truth, the believer who is careless about the teaching of God's Word of God of Truth, or who wants to emphasize works and the production of human good and evil, this person is destined from God to die.
The present tense is a futuristic present describing the fact that maximum discipline from God in the form of the sin unto death, has not yet occurred but is about to happen so it is expected to happen in the very near future.
The active voice: reversionistic believers produce the action of the verb. The indicative mood is declarative representing the action from the viewpoint of reality.
Next is a supporting verb in the infinitive form, the present active infinitive of "apothnesko" (die) that is used to describe maximum discipline from God to the believer in time. The only time that God can discipline a believer is in time so this refers to the sin unto death.
The perfective present describes the continuation of the existing results of reversionism. The active voice: the reversionist produces the action. The reversionist is a believer who possesses eternal salvation, and cannot lose his eternal salvation, but he is going to exit his biological body this way.
The consequence of reversionism is the sin unto death. "Indeed if you live under the authority of the old sin nature (and you do), you are destined to die" (the sin unto death).
The first option presented to the believer in phase two is rejection of rebound plus neglect of Bible doctrine resulting in varying stages of God's discipline. When the old sin nature dominates the believer' soul the evil trends of the sin nature result in sin, human good, and evil.
The believer following one or more of these trends enters into either carnality and then into reversionism through the function of human good, but eventually winds up under the complete influence of evil.
All the good deeds, all the personality improvements, all the self-righteousness, all the dedications, do not stop the advance of reversionism.
Only the function of rebound and the daily perception of Bible doctrine under God's GASP system protects the believer against reversionism and God's ultimate discipline of the sin unto death.
This means that the a fortiori that began at salvation with the judicial imputation of God's righteousness is never completed with maximum blessing from God's justice to the believer who never develops capacity from metabolized doctrine. The only way for those blessings to be imputed is for the believer to glorify God by their to advance to spiritual maturity.
Lacking the blessings from God's justice in time the believer in eternity has nothing more than ultimate sanctification. Therefore a principle: To lose out on rewards and blessing in time, means to lose out on rewards and blessing in eternity.
The believer who does not receive blessings in time cannot lose his salvation. There is only loss of blessing and reward above and beyond imputed judicial righteousness in time, and the resurrection body in eternity. This is described as being a "loser believer."
The second alternative described in verse 13 deals with the phrase, "but if by the spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body." The adversative conjunctive particle "de" (but) sets up a contrast between the two clauses that describe the reversionist who neglects Bible doctrine with the positive believer who advances in doctrine and grows in grace.
With the "de" (but) there is also the conjunctive particle "ei" (if) that is used as a conditional particle that sets up another protasis of a fist class condition that is assumed to be true.
This tells us that as long as the believer is biologically alive he can always recover from reversionism and exercise the option of maturity adjustment to God's justice.
Then the instrumental of means from "pneuma" (spirit), referring to God the Holy Spirit who has everything to do with teaching us God's Truth if we opt for it. So the Holy Spirit not only controls the believer's soul under rebound and/the filling of the Spirit but He is also the means of understanding God's Word of Truth for spiritual advance.
"But if by means of the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body" Paul has just said that if the believer lives under the authority of the old sin nature he is destined to die the sin unto death. He now goes on to say that while the believer is still alive he can put some things to death and eliminate any possibility of dying the sin unto death.
That is expresses with the present active indicative of the verb "thanatoo" (death) that means to kill, to deliver over to death, to condemn to death, or to recognize as dead. It is that last definition that fits here.
Paul is telling us that the believer has an option to die the sin unto death, or while still alive to put something to death so that death will never be feared so we have "but if by means of the Spirit you recognize as dead (or, condemn to death)."
With the accusative plural direct object from "praxis" (deeds) referring to actions or functions, plus the ablative of singular of source from "soma" (body) with the definite article "ho" (the)) referring to the biological body.
We have been discussing human good so it means to renounce and reject any system of self-righteousness and any system or panacea for improving the devil's world.
The retroactive progressive present tense of "thanatoo" (death) describes what must begin at salvation and continue throughout the believer's life. Rebound for the filling of the Spirit and the daily function of GASP to stay away from the evil of self-righteousness, judging, maligning, and trying to improve the devil's world by doing human good.
The active voice tells us that the believer must produce the action of the verb. This will result in rejection of human good as a system because human good is the greatest temptation to the believer and it is the believer's biggest of distraction from God's Word of Truth.
Recognizing human good as dead and therefore as a part of the divorce that occurred at salvation is the basis of avoiding the evil of human good that is the greatest obstacle to the post salvation Christian life.
The indicative mood describes a potential indicative of obligation that describes the only way to live the Christian way of life. Believers have to recognize, condemn and reject doing the evil of human good.
The Holy Spirit takes doctrine that is resident in the heart of the believer's soul and applies it in all of the areas where we can get sucked into performing the evil of human good. The believer must store doctrine in the heart of the soul in order to avoid the temptation to do the evil of human good be self-righteous.
Believers can do this when they understand that all blessings from God come through the encapsulated grace pipeline. Believers never receive blessing from God because they do human good deeds they receive blessing from God because they stand firm in their position in God's grace.
"You will live" is the translation of the future middle indicative from the verb "zao"(live). The future tense is progressive so it refers to progress in future time. So the progressive future describes the believer's advance to spiritual maturity and maturity adjustment to God's justice that glorifies Jesus Christ, and results in the believer receiving blessings from God.
It is a reference to living the new life that Paul is explaining in Romans 8, the life that exclusively belongs to God's royal family. The middle voice is a direct middle so it describes the believer participating in the results of the action of receiving blessing from God's justice that glorify Jesus Christ.
The believer participates in the results of advancing toward spiritual maturity. The indicative mood makes a statement of fact from the viewpoint of reality "you will live," with blessings in spiritual maturity.
Expanded Translation Rom 8:13: "if you live under the authority of the old sin nature, you are destined to die (maximum discipline), but if by means of the Spirit you recognize as dead the deeds of the body (sin, human good and evil from the OSN), you shall live."
