In our verse-by-verse study of Romans we are in Rom 8:13; where two mutually exclusive alternatives for believers are discussed. The first alternative is to remain under obligation to the OSN after salvation and come under discipline from God that if unabated ends in the sin unto biological death.
The second alternative described in verse 13 is in the phrase "but if by the spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body you will live." The adversative conjunctive particle "de" (but) sets up a contrast between the two clauses that describe the reversionist who neglects Bible doctrine with the positive believer who advances in God's plan and grows in grace.
With "de" (but) there is the conjunctive particle "ei" (if) that is used as a conditional particle that sets up another protasis of a first class condition of "if" that is assumed to be true.
This tells us that as long as the believer is biologically alive he can always recover from reversionism and exercise the option of advancing to maturity adjustment to God's justice.
Then the instrumental of means from "pneuma" (spirit), referring to God the Holy Spirit who has everything to do with teaching believers God's Truth if we opt for it. So the Holy Spirit not only controls the believer's soul under rebound and the filling of the Spirit but His teaching ministry is the only means of understanding God's Word of Truth for spiritual advance.
"But if by means of the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body" Paul has just said that if the believer lives under the authority of the old sin nature he is destined to die the sin unto death. He now goes on to say that while the believer is still biologically alive he can put some things to death and eliminate any possibility of dying the sin unto death.
That is expressed with the present active indicative of the verb "thanatoo" (death) that means to kill, to deliver over to death, to condemn to death, or to recognize as dead. It is that last definition that works here.
Paul is telling us that the believer has an option to die the sin unto death, or while still alive to put something to death so that death will never be feared so we have "but if by means of the Spirit you recognize as dead (or, condemn to death)."
With the accusative plural direct object from "praxis" (deeds) referring to actions or functions, plus the ablative of singular of source from "soma" (body) with the definite article "ho" (the)) referring to the biological body.
We have been discussing human good so it means to renounce and reject every system of self-righteousness and any system or panacea for improving the devil's world that can be done by the biological body.
The retroactive progressive present tense of "thanatoo" (death) describes what must begin at salvation and continue throughout the remainder of the believer's biological life.
Rebound for the filling of the Spirit and the daily function under God's GASP system is necessary for the believer to keep away from the evil of self-righteousness, judging, maligning, and trying to improve the devil's world by doing some kind of human good.
The active voice tells us that the believer must produce the action of the verb. This will result in rejection of human good as a system because human good is the greatest temptation for the believer and it is the believer's biggest of distraction from God's Word of Truth.
Recognizing that human good is dead as a part of the divorce that occurred at salvation is the basis of avoiding the production of the evil of human good that is the greatest obstacle to the Christian life.
The indicative mood is a potential indicative of obligation that describes the only way to live the Christian way of life. Believers have to recognize, condemn and reject performing the evil of human good.
The Holy Spirit takes doctrine that is resident in the heart of the believer's soul and applies it in all of the areas where we can get sucked into performing the evil of human good.
The believer must store doctrine in the heart of the soul in order to avoid the temptation to do the evil of human good and to be self-righteous.
Believers are able to do this when they understand that all blessings from God come through the encapsulated grace pipeline apart from works. Believers never receive blessing from God because they do human good works they receive blessing from God because they stand firm in their position in God's grace.
"You will live" is the translation of the future middle indicative from the verb "zao"(live). The future tense is progressive so it refers to progress in future time. The progressive future describes the believer's advance to spiritual maturity and maturity adjustment to God's justice that glorifies Jesus Christ, and results in the believer receiving blessings from God.
It is a reference to living the new life that Paul is explaining in Romans 8, the life that exclusively belongs to God's royal family. The middle voice is a direct middle so it describes the believer participating in the results of the action of receiving blessing from God's justice that glorify Jesus Christ.
The believer participates in the advance toward spiritual maturity with positive volition. The indicative mood makes a statement of fact from the viewpoint of reality "you will live," with blessings in spiritual maturity.
Expanded Translation Rom 8:13: "if you live under the authority of the old sin nature, you are destined to die (maximum discipline), but if by means of the Spirit you recognize as dead the deeds of the body (sin, human good and evil from the OSN), you will live."
This is a reference to living a new kind of life that is a life that is related to God's plan that completely eliminates both preconceived ideas and human good motivation. In other words, this means to live a life in accord with God's Word of Truth rather than in accord with our own ideas.
This also means to reject human standards and substitute God's standards. Spiritual maturity is God's objective for the Christian way of life because spiritual maturity results in the glorification of the Lord Jesus Christ.
In glorifying Christ, for the first time we receive greater direct blessing from God. Logistical grace is a blessing but it's purpose is simply to sustain us until we reach spiritual maturity and have capacity for greater grace.
It is impossible to advance to spiritual maturity when one is entangled in systems of human good, religion and asceticism. All believers are tempted at some time or some way to enter into the production of human good that is deviation from God's purpose for believer in this life.
In this verse the alternatives of the Christian way of life are explained in terms of the resultant outcomes. The outcomes are either the sin unto death from reversionism or God's direct blessing from spiritual maturity.
The results are opposite. Reversionism is maladjustment to God's justice and spiritual maturity is complete adjustment to God's justice. Believers will either adjust to God's justice or God's justice of God will adjust to the believer.
If the believer adjusts to God's justice by advancing to spiritual maturity God's justice will provide greater direct imputation of blessing but if the believer rejects God's system then God's justice will adjust to the believer with discipline.
The tree of the knowledge of good and evil is just as dangerous to believers today as it was to Adam and Ishah in the garden. We must avoid the human good of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
This verse commands to recognize as dead the actions of the body and the human good it produces because they have been dealt with once and for all in the divorce from the old sin nature.
The divorce from the sin nature is death to the old sin nature. Positionally the power of the ex-husband has been broken. Experientially this freedom is exploited through the filling of the Spirit and the daily function under GASP.
Maximum exploitation of this victory occurs at maturity adjustment to God's justice.
Verses 14-17 describe the results of the second alternative that is maturity adjustment to God's justice. The first result that is described in verse 14 is God's guidance.
Only believers who are positive towards God, and listening to and obeying God's Word of Truth under the teaching ministry of God the Holy Spirit are actually guided by God because the Holy Spirit's teaching of God's Word of Truth is the source of all guidance from God.
Rom 8:14; "For as many as are led by the Spirit of God." The postpositive conjunctive particle "gar" (for) is used to explain a cause or a reason for this. The nominative plural from the correlative adjective "hosos" (as many) refers to those believers who attain spiritual maturity through the filling of the Spirit and maximum PMA of God's Word of Truth.
Then the present passive indicative from the verb "ago" (led) so we have "for as many as are led." The present tense is a retroactive progressive present, describing what has begun in the past and continues into the present time.
The mature believer is "led by the Spirit of God." The passive voice: the mature believer receives the action of the verb. The indicative mood is a statement of dogmatic fact that explains that the mature believer is definitely guided by God. The means is described as the "Spirit." "Pneuma" (spirit) with the descriptive genitive singular of "Theos" (God). So we have "by the Spirit of God."
God's guidance for determining God's will for your life regarding a few specific things and many general principles comes from God's Word through the teaching ministry of God the Holy Spirit. God's guidance is the communication of God's will through what God's Word of truth reveals.
In the Church Age God's revelation to believers is limited to what God reveals in His Word of Truth. The canon of Scripture contains everything related to God's guidance. God's discipline and human disaster as a classification of God's guidance is mostly limited to general principles.
For the reversionists there is guidance from God because scripture tells us that there will be warning and intensive discipline before dying discipline. This discipline only tells the believer that he is on the wrong road.
The only specific way to positively know God's will is through direct commands that are in God's Word. These commands include Eph 5:18; Gal 5:16; and similar passages.
Believers cannot know the will of God without being filled with God the Holy Spirit and having spirit taught knowledge of God's Word of Truth so that explains that only believers who are filled with the Spirit and who know God's Word are being led by God.
Rom 8:14; "These are sons of God" "these are," refers specifically to mature believers who are experientially "sons of God" because they are listening to and complying with God's Word of Truth. The active voice: mature believers produce the action of the verb.
All believers are positionally in God's royal family so all believers are positionally sons of God by faith in Christ Jesus but this verse is describing what is happening experientially.
The indicative mood is declarative for a statement of fact. Plus the predicate nominative plural of "houtos" (these) that is used here in the Greek to describe a "mature son."
As always the Greek is very specific. The absence of the definite article "ho" with "hotos" helps us understand that this is referring to "mature sons."
Without the definite article "ho" "hutos" is anartharous. In the Greek the absence of the definite article means the highest quality of the noun or adjective involved so it is referring to mature believers because they are the "highest quality."
