In our verse-by-verse study of Romans we are in Rom 9:5; where we stopped at the phrase "according to the flesh."
We noted that God's Shekinah glory is no longer manifested between the cherubs of the Ark of the Covenant in Israel because eternal God has now became true humanity in the per son of the Lord Jesus Christ.
He became true humanity so God is now visible to Israel and everyone else with the same results that existed under the principle of the Shekinah glory in ancient Israel when God manifested Himself as a cloud over the tabernacle by day and with a pillar of fire by night so Israel knew that the Shekinah glory of God was with them.
Many of the Israelites weren't very interested in this because just like today with people being what they are under total depravity and negative volition to God from sin nature control of the soul they are only interested in physical things. 1Cor 2:14;
It is the filling ministry of God the Holy Spirit and doctrine in the soul with the teaching ministry of God the Holy Spirit that makes the difference because with doctrine in the soul you do not need the Lord Jesus Christ visibly holding your hand because you have His thinking in your soul.
Rom 9:5; Next is the verb "eime" (who is) with the preposition "epi"(over) with the genitive plural of "pas" (all), (who is over all) "Theos" (God). Again this is elliptical so it means "ruler over all God" that refers to the second advent of the Lord Jesus Christ.
The incarnation that resulted in the humanity of Jesus Christ is how God dealt with sins of the world by imputing them to the Lord Jesus Christ and judging them on the cross.
But it also has a relationship to Israel. Israel would always have an excuse that they could not see the Shekinah glory because all they could see was the cloud or the pillar of fire that was above the tabernacle.
And since they couldn't actually see God's glory there was a stumbling block to their faith. So now God's Shekinah glory becomes human so it is visible, but the same negative volition that existed in the Old Testament existed at the coming Jesus Christ so that being face to face with the Lord did not improve anything for the Jews.
The incarnation and resultant humanity of Jesus Christ does not in any way decrease the second person of the Trinity. Jesus Christ as true humanity continues to be undiminished deity forever and as eternal God He still has all of the attributes of God but now in addition He also has all of the attributes of His perfect humanity.
He is the last Adam. "From whom are the fathers (the regenerate ancestors Abraham, Isaac and Jacob], from whom is the Christ, the one who came in the flesh, the one who is the God who is ruler over all.
The rest of the verse is a command to praise, to recognize and to fulfill the very purpose for which God established the Jews. It starts with a verbal adjective, "eulogetos" (praised).
This word is only used with reference to God never. It is a verbal adjective that is derived from the adverb "eu" plus the verb "lego" that means to speak well of or to praise, to extol, or to eulogize.
The Greek root word "eulogeto" is transliterated into the English word eulogize and it is equivalent to the Hebrew "baruk that "means "being praised" or "being blessed."
It is used to describe praise for the eternal glory of the Lord Jesus Christ who is eternal God.
Israel had it all. Never in all of history until the Exodus and the formation of the nation of Israel, and the construction of the tabernacle had any people ever had the personal presence of God among them or in their nation.
That is because Israel was the first client nation to God as a priest nation. This was to be to their advantage because the Jews are the only race, the only nation, the only people who were ever founded or originated on the basis of a spiritual reality rather than a physical reality.
The Jewish race and the nation of Israel had everything going for them but the principle remains: You can have everything in the world going for you and still destroy all of it with negative volition.
There are two major opportunities for negative volition in the spiritual realm. The first is negative volition to Jesus Christ for salvation and the second is a persistent negative volition toward the thinking of Jesus Christ as a believer in Jesus Christ after salvation.
You can be aggressive about anything in the world but if you are passive towards God's Word in your soul it is over. The exploitation of advantage is the exploitation of spiritual advantage because it is the spiritual advantage that matters.
Having all of the advantages without the advantage of doctrine in the soul is no advantage. Every client nation to God has failed because of this and we see this same principle operational in the USA at this time.
The advantages of living in the greatest nation on the earth are no advantage without believing in Jesus Christ.
Next we have "eis ho" (into the) plus the accusative plural of "aion" (ages) that literally means " into the ages" but it is a Greek idiom that means forever.
This is followed by the liturgical conclusion, "amen" (amen) emphasizing the function of the process of converting gnosis resident in the left lobe of the soul into epignosis resident in the right lobe of the soul under GASP.
Only epignosis doctrine resident in the right lobe can be used for spiritual advance, for momentum, for motivation, and for making life meaningful and worthwhile from having doctrinal capacity for life.
Expanded Translation Rom 9:5; "From whom are the fathers [the regenerate ancestors Abraham, Isaac and Jacob], and from whom is the Christ, the one who came in the flesh, the one who is ruler over all, God extolled (praised) forever. Amen."
In this verse Paul's use of ellipsis reveals his excitement and his concern for his nation Israel.
In this verse we see a liturgical doxology that is elliptical that reminds the unbelieving Jews that Jesus Christ is the God of Israel and that He is the Shekinah glory.
We see that His personal presence with Israel was without precedent and without parallel in any nation in history, and that making Himself visible by coming in the flesh it the hypostatic union maximized it.
Since Jesus Christ is the God of Israel Paul's concern for the unbelieving Jew is intensified, and the intensity of his concern is revealed and expressed by his use of ellipsis.
In the dispensation of Israel the Jews had the Shekinah glory, the personal presence of the Lord Jesus Christ dwelling in the holy of holies between the cherubs. In spite of this, in every generation there are Jews who reject Christ as savior.
This negative volition is dramatized by the incarnation in where the Shekinah glory becomes visible to the Jews through the hypostatic union where they actually saw Him. John 1:14.
They saw His grace, they heard His doctrinal teaching, they were face to face with Him, and they still rejected Him. That is why there has to be a first advent and the second advent.
There has to be a demonstration to Israel, that in effect becomes a demonstration to the entire world that reveals that even though the Lord God personally comes to visit you and talks to you personally, performs miracles for you, does everything so that you can actually see grace and doctrine in operation people still have free will.
Mankind still has self-determination so mankind is still a free agent. Being a free agent and rejecting the Lord Jesus Christ is the greatest tragedy. At the cross man is at his worst and God is at His best.
The one who was hanging on the cross was not only the Shekinah glory, the God of Israel, the son of David, the future ruler of Israel, God, ruler over all, but at the same time He was the only savior.
Smart Jews rejected this but many dumb gentiles did not.
With regard to God reality is what you think; that God not only invented the world that you see, but He also invented thought, vocabulary, and philology.
He invented something where reality is in your thought. Principle: Guts are not actually in the bowels they are in the thinking. The phrase Intestinal fortitude is actually incorrect because true guts are in the soul because it is what you think that counts.
The transformation of the Shekinah glory into the hypostatic union dramatizes the negative volition of Israel into their rejection of Jesus Christ as Messiah. But it does more than that because Israel is a photograph of the individual soul of believing Gentiles so it dramatizes what human nature is like.
Except the high priest who once a year entered twice on the Day of Atonement - once for himself and once for the people - the Jews were never permitted to enter the holy of holies where the Shekinah glory dwelt.
When he came out the people would want to know what the Lord looked like. A smart priest would open a scroll and say, "Here is what he looks like right here!" That is what is wrong with people. People want to see it with their eyes instead of understand it with their mentality.
But no Jew has an excuse for his negative volition because the Shekinah glory became visible to Israel with the incarnation of the Lord Jesus Christ.
The first advent of Christ allowed Israel to see the Shekinah glory. But Israel rejected the Shekinah glory in the person of the Lord Jesus Christ who is Adonai Elohim, the God of Israel.
Seeing the Shekinah glory in person only intensified their negative volition. So all Jews of every generation who reject Christ are without excuse.
The origin of the Jewish race is totally spiritual in contrast to the origin of all other races. All Gentile races originate through physical birth. The Jewish race is absolutely unique; it originates through spiritual birth and the momentum there after related to maturity.
All Gentile races are descendants of Noah through Shem, Ham, and Japheth but the Jewish race is descended from Abraham through Isaac and Jacob.
The Jewish race originated when Abraham was 100 years old; but more important, a mature believer so the Jewish race originates from the spiritual birth and resultant spiritual growth of Abraham. Therefore the origin of the Jews and the origin of the Gentiles are entirely different.
Paul's burden is related to the fact that negative volition has blinded the Jews to their origin. Their origin is spiritual; they are not great because of their physical genes.
It is their origin to which they are blinded, so that having the genes of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and being very proud of their descent, they have selected self-righteousness rather than God's righteousness from Jesus Christ.
The true Jew can never be a Jew by simply possessing the genes of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. The true Jew must possess the spiritual heritage of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. The spiritual heritage is the new birth.
There is no way for any physical descendant of Abraham to inherit the promises to Israel that are described in the unconditional covenants. Only the spiritual descendants of Abraham are qualified to inherit through the imputation of God's righteousness and eternal life at salvation.
