In our verse-by-verse study of Romans we are in Rom 9:5; at the last phrase that is translated in the NASB as "blessed forever Amen." We noted that the word translated "blessed" is the Greek word "eulogetos" that is transliterated into the English as eulogize.
Next we have "eis ho" (into the) plus the accusative plural of "aion" (ages) that literally means " into the ages" but it is actually a Greek idiom that means forever.
This is followed by the liturgical conclusion, "amen" (amen) emphasizing the function of faith rest that is the function of the process of converting gnosis resident in the left lobe of the soul into epignosis resident in the right lobe of the soul under GASP.
Only epignosis doctrine resident in the believer's right lobe can be used for spiritual advance, for momentum, for motivation, and for making life meaningful and worthwhile from having God's point of view from doctrinal capacity for life.
Expanded Translation Rom 9:5; "From whom are the fathers [the regenerate ancestors Abraham, Isaac and Jacob], and from whom is the Christ, the one who came in the flesh, the one who is ruler over all, God extolled (praised) forever. Amen."
In this verse Paul's use of ellipsis reveals his excitement and his concern for his nation Israel.
In this verse we see a liturgical doxology that is elliptical that reminds the unbelieving Jews that Jesus Christ is the God of Israel and that He is the Shekinah glory.
We see that His personal presence with Israel was without precedent and without parallel in any nation in history, and that making Himself visible by coming in the flesh it the hypostatic union maximized it.
Since Jesus Christ is the God of Israel Paul's concern for the unbelieving Jew is intensified, and the intensity of his concern is revealed and expressed by his use of ellipsis.
In the dispensation of Israel the Jews had the Shekinah glory, the personal presence of the Lord Jesus Christ dwelling in the holy of holies between the cherubs. In spite of this, in every generation there are Jews who reject Christ as savior.
This negative volition is dramatized by the incarnation in where the Shekinah glory becomes visible to the Jews through the hypostatic union where they actually saw Him. John 1:14;
They saw His grace, they heard His doctrinal teaching, they were face to face with Him, and they still rejected Him. That is why there has to be a first advent and the Second Advent.
There has to be a demonstration to Israel, that in effect becomes a demonstration to the entire world that reveals that even though the Lord God personally comes to visit you and talks to you personally, performs miracles for you, does everything so that you can actually see grace and doctrine in operation people still have free will.
Mankind still has self-determination so mankind is still a free agent. Being a free agent and rejecting the Lord Jesus Christ is the greatest tragedy. At the cross man is at his worst and God is at His best.
The one who was hanging on the cross was not only the Shekinah glory, the God of Israel, the son of David, the future ruler of Israel, God, ruler over all, but at the same time He was the only savior.
Smart Jewish unbelievers rejected this but many not as smart gentile believers did not. With regard to God reality is what you think. God not only invented the world that you see but He also invented thought, vocabulary, and language for the communication of His Word of truth.
He invented the concept that your reality is in your thought. We see from this that the phrase "Intestinal fortitude" is actually incorrect because true guts are in the soul because it is what you think that counts because the "guts "that really count are not in the intestines they are in the thinking.
The transformation of God's Shekinah glory into the hypostatic union reveals Israel's negative volition because they also rejected Jesus Christ as their Messiah it actually does more than that because the nation of Israel is a photograph of the individual souls of people so it also reveals what the human nature of the natural person is really like.
Except the high priest who once a year entered twice on the Day of Atonement - once for himself and once for the people- the Jews were never permitted to enter the holy of holies where God's Shekinah glory dwelt.
When he came out some of the people would want to know what the Lord looked like. A smart priest would open a scroll and say, "Here is what he looks like right here." But the people wanted to see it with their eyes instead of understand it with their mentality. That is what is wrong with people.
But no Jew has an excuse for his negative volition because with the incarnation of the Lord Jesus Christ the Shekinah glory became visible.
The first advent of Jesus Christ enabled Israel to see the Shekinah glory. But Israel rejected the Shekinah glory in the person of the Lord Jesus Christ who is Adonai Elohim, the God of Israel.
But seeing God's Shekinah glory in person did not help their negative volition it only intensified their negative volition. But because they rejected Jesus every Jewish person of every generation who continue to reject Jesus is without excuse.
The spiritual origin of the Jewish race is in contrast with the genetic origin of all the other races. All Gentile races originate through physical birth. The Jewish race is completely unique because it was originated through spiritual birth and the power that came from spiritual maturity.
All Gentile races are descendants of Noah through Shem, Ham, and Japheth but the Jewish race is descended from Abraham through Isaac and Jacob.
The Jewish race originated when Abraham was 100 years old; but it was more important that he was a mature believer so the Jewish race originates from the spiritual birth and resultant spiritual growth of Abraham. Therefore the origin of the Jewish race and the origin of the Gentile races are entirely different.
Paul's concern is related to the fact that the Jews have been blinded to their origin actual origin by their negative volition. Their origin is spiritual; they are not great because of their physical gene pool. They are great because of God's unconditional promises to Abraham.
They are blinded to their true origin so that having the genes of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and being very proud of their descent, they have selected their own self-righteousness instead of God's imputed judicial righteousness from believing in Jesus Christ.
The true Jew can never be a Jew by simply possessing the genes of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. The true Jew must also possess the spiritual heritage of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. That spiritual heritage is from being born again.
There is no way for any physical descendant of Abraham to inherit the promises to Israel that are described in the unconditional covenants. Only the spiritual descendants of Abraham are qualified to inherit through the imputation of God's judicial righteousness and eternal life at salvation.
Rom 9:6; This verse refutes the false premise that God's Word has failed because all of genetic Israel will not be saved. In the Greek the sentence begins with "ou hoion de hoti" that is literally translated, "It is not such but that." We have the conjunctive particle "de" (but) emphasizing a contrast with what was previously said.
Next is the strong negative "ou" (not). Because of the ellipsis a good translation into the English requires the insertion of "it is" so with the insertion in the verb in the English we have "But it is not" with the added verb "it is" is inserted in italics as the NASB does.
Followed by the predicate nominative neuter singular from the correlative relative pronoun "hos." This is what requires the insertion of the verb "to be" because the predicate nominative of "hoion" demands the verb to be.
With the negative "hoion' means "not such as" or "not as implying." It can be translated it as "But it is not as implying that" but a better translation is "However, this is not to imply that."
In the Greek the perfect active indicative of "ekpipto" (fall or fail) that is a compound word formed from ("ek" = from; "pipt" = to fall), so it means to fall from or to fall off. In our verse it means to fail.
It was used by sailors as a nautical expression for drifting off course, or to run aground but here in this context it means to be ineffective or to lose force and validity, or become feckless and therefore to fail.
Followed by the nominative singular subject "logos" (word) with the definite article "ho" (the). " Ho Logos" is more than just " the Word," "Logos" actually means thought but thought is impossible without vocabulary. Thought requires words that can be sequenced together to communicate.
Then the possessive genitive singular from "Theos" (God) again with the generic use of the definite article "ho" (the) making it monadic. Literally it says, "the word of the God," so the generic use of the definite article to describe that the canon of scripture as absolutely unique means that it is not necessary to translate the article, so we will translate it as "the Word of God."
The principle behind this is very important. The entire Old Testament is the spiritual heritage of Israel. It contains the unconditional covenants, the promises to Israel regarding the future of the Jewish race and their nation.
Put together it all adds up to something very wonderful for Israel. In other words, they are going to have something that is absolutely beyond their imagination. Reduced to temporal language it describes a nation forever, a people of God forever and under theocratic rule forever not only in eternity but also in time.
Time refers specifically to the millennial reign of Jesus Christ. The problem is that because of the insertion of the Church Age and the administration of the fifth cycle of discipline to the nation it is not obvious that Israel has future.
The insertion of the Church Age is described to the unbelieving Jews as the times of the Gentiles. The Jews were always the client nation to God in the Old Testament. The times of the Gentiles means the Jews are excluded from being a client nation.
This is very discouraging to the Jews because it appears that by calling out a the Church as a royal family that God is not going to keep His word and is not going to fulfill His promises to the Jews individually or as a nation. The insertion of the Church Age has complicated the problem for the Jews.
So our translation so far is "However this is not to imply that the word of God has failed." The perfect tense is a consummative perfect it emphasizes the process of presenting a past act with apparent present result.
The active voice: the Word of God is alleged to have produced the action in the thinking of the unbeliever Jew, in the thinking of the believing Jew who is in reversionism describing the majority of believing Jews in Paul's time.
The indicative mood is a potential indicative since the Word of God has never failed. The potential indicative indicates this is an allegation without foundation.
Israel's present discipline as a nation and the failure of individual Jewish people does not and cannot neutralize the promises of God or the plan of God as revealed in God's Word. The failure of any individual or the failure of any nation does not in anyway cancel anything in God's Word.
Individual and collective failure does not hinder God's plan nor does it question the validity of God's Word. God's plan and God's Word advances with or without us because God does not need us to fulfill His plan, but we need Him.
Collective or individual failure of the Jewish people does not abrogate or rescind the promises of God for Israel that are specifically for the believers in Israel. Human failure cannot hinder the advance of God's plan.
The failure of any specific unbeliever or believer does not imply the failure of God's Word that reveals God's plan. Rejection of Jesus Christ, the God of Israel, puts the Jews outside of God's plan and the unconditional covenants to Israel.
Human rejection of Jesus Christ does not imply that the Word of God has failed but simply that people including the Jewish people have failed to use free will and self-determination to believe in Jesus Christ.
God's Word clearly presents the opportunity for the alternative of God's judgment just as much as it presents the opportunity for God's grace blessings. The fact that many Jews are under divine judgment in every generation does not hinder God's promises to the Jews. It just means that some through the function of their own free will miss out on the opportunity,
The Word of God promises judgment in time as well as in eternity to the Jew who rejects the God of Israel. To the Jew who rejects Jehovah Elohim or Jesus Christ that has always been true in every generation, Old Testament or New.
The Word of God has not failed the Jew; the Jew has failed the Word of God. God's promises have not become untrue to the exclusion of a portion of the Jews, for God's promises can only be valid to Jews or Gentiles who have God's imputed judicial righteousness and eternal life.
Therefore God's promises are valid only to believing Jews who comprise the true Israel. Scripture defines true and false Israel on the basis of attitude toward the Lord Jesus Christ. That has always been true. Jehovah, the Adonai of the Old Testament is the Lord Jesus Christ we are just dealing with different languages.
True Israel believes in the God of Israel, Jesus Christ, just as Abraham their father did in Gen 15:6. True Israel follows the pattern of Abraham by believing in the Lord Jesus Christ and God's promises are always valid to true Israel.
