In our verse by verse study of Romans last time we completed our Expanded Translation of Rom 9:7; "Neither because they are Abraham's descendants are all racial Jews the children of the inheritance: but, in Isaac shall be elected your descendants."
We noted that the Jewish race began with Abraham's attainment of spiritual maturity that is represented by his circumcision when he was about 100 years old.
This is illustrated by the fact that the Jewish race originated from those who believed in Jehovah Elohim who God's Word later reveals as Jesus Christ, God's Shekinah glory. John 1:14;
The believer Abraham is the first Jew while his unbelieving brother Nahor remained a Gentile. As a believer Abraham was under the doctrinal categories of election, foreknowledge and predestination
There is a printout for each of those categories in God's decree. God's omniscience knew all the knowable, whether actual or possible. God knows every decision every human being will ever make.
God also knows the result of every decision in history and also knows what would be the result had free will determined to select another alternative. Therefore God's omniscience knows what happens in history and what could have happened, or may have happened under different circumstances.
So God's omniscience fed all of this into the His decree and only what actually happens is contained in the decree. In turn, the content of the decree is revealed in advance in prophecy and eventually printed out in time in its various categories including election, foreknowledge, and predestination.
God's Word reveals that in the decree we have Abraham and Isaac as the origin of the Jewish race. Since Israel is an election of God it must originate with regeneration for the possession of eternal life and the potential for blessing from God.
God's Word also reveals that the origin of the Jewish race is totally spiritual because it is based on regeneration, in contrast to the origin the Gentile races that are based upon biological birth. All Gentile races are the biological descendants of Noah through Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
The Jewish race originated with Abraham after his salvation adjustment to God's justice that was followed by maturity adjustment to God's justice from maximum doctrine in the soul that was when Abraham the Gentile was circumcised and became Abraham the Jew.
Since the Gentiles originate from physical birth and the Jews originate from spiritual birth no racial Jew can be a true Jew until he personally believes in the Lord Jesus Christ, the Shekinah glory who is the God of Israel. John 1:14;
At the moment of faith in Christ the real Jew receives the imputation of God's judicial righteousness and eternal life that is necessary for direct blessing from God in time and eternity.
Paul's burden is related to the fact that the Jews negative volition to Jesus Christ has blinded them to their true spiritual origin. Paul's contemporary Jews were suffering from terminal self-righteousness from failing to equate the Lord Jesus Christ with the invisible Shekinah glory of the God of Israel.
So the true Jew can never be a true Jew by simply possessing the biological genes of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. He can only be a true Jew by also possessing the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob through faith in Jesus Christ.
That means that there is no way for any biological only descendants of Abraham to inherit the promises of Israel. Only the spiritual descendants of Abraham are qualified to inherit those promises through regeneration and the resultant imputation of God's judicial righteousness and eternal life.
Rom 9:8; begins with the nominative neuter singular of the demonstrative pronoun "houtos" (that) used to reference the previous verse with the present active indicative from the to be verb "eimi" (is)". It expresses a statement of doctrinal fact that is relevant to the argument. It is translated "that is," or "this is' but it is an idiom for "This means."
Next is the adverb "ou" (not) denying the reality of an alleged fact or assumption. The ellipsis combined with the adverb demands another to be verb again the present active indicative of "eimi"(is) translated as "is not."
Followed by the nominative plural subject from the noun "teknon" (children) emphasizing inheritance as in children who are heirs with the possessive genitive singular from the noun "sarx" (flesh) referring to racial Jews.
Then another nominative neuter plural subject the demonstrative pronoun "houtos" (that) this time it refers to the racial Jews, those who have the biological genes of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob referring to biological descendants.
Again because of the ellipsis we insert the present active indicative of "eimi"(are) with the negative "ou" (not) so we have "these are not." This explains that Abraham's biological descendants of the flesh referring to racial Jews are not the inheritors.
Next we have the predicate nominative plural from "teknon"(children), used to refer to children who actually are heirs with the possessive genitive singular from "Theos" (God) with the generic use of the definite article 'ho" (the) making it monadic so we have "the God" referring specifically to the God of Israel who is Jesus Christ.
This means that racial Jews who are biological descendants of the flesh are not "children of the God." That explains that being a biological genetic Jew does not imply automatic salvation, automatic heirship, and automatically becoming heirs of God's promises to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
This is telling us that being a biological Jew does not imply automatic salvation. The racial Jews like every human being Jew or Gentile must be born again. Unbelieving Jews are racial but not regenerate.
To be an heir that is a recipient of God's promises to Abraham, the racial Jew must believe in Jesus Christ and become a regenerate Jew.
The racial Jew may be a "good person" because they have self-righteousness by keeping the Mosaic Law but that is not good enough. The racial Jew must also have God's judicial righteousness that is imputed directly from God, following the pattern of Abraham as described in Gen 15:6.
Rom 9:8; Next is the adversative conjunction "alla" (but) that sets up a strong contrast between the racial Jew who is biologically descended from Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and the regenerate Jew who also follows the spiritual pattern of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob by believing.
And the nominative plural subject, "teknon" (children), referring to a child who is an heir. With it is a possessive genitive singular from the noun "epaggelia" (promise) referring to the content of the Abrahamic, Palestinian, Davidic and New covenants to Israel as "the children of the promise."
With the present passive indicative from the verb "logizomai" (are regarded)" it means to calculate, reason, or to consider. The static present tense here represents a condition that is assumed to exist perpetually because it takes for granted that this is an eternal reality.
The passive voice: the regenerate Jews received the action of the verb, they have believed in Jesus Christ so they have eternal life that is the capacity that is necessary to receive the eternal promises. The indicative mood is a dogmatic statement of reality.
Plus the preposition phrase, "eis" (to) with the accusative singular of "sperma" (descendants). There is no definite article here so it is anarthrous so it emphasizes the qualitative aspect of Abraham's descendants that is the fact that they are born again in the same way that Abraham was born again.
Expanded Translation Rom 9:8; "This means that the descendants of the flesh (racial Jews), are not the children of the God: but the children of the promise are counted as descendants."
We see here that God's promise of the Abrahamic covenant was not confirmed to Ishmael, or to the sons of Keturah, but exclusively to Isaac. This emphasizes the fact that the line of Israel was based not only on Abraham's biological progeny but more importantly his spiritual progeny.
In other words, Isaac was a believer; Ishmael was not. God's omniscience knew in eternity past that Abraham, Isaac and Jacob would believe in Jesus Christ, but Nahor, Ishmael and Esau would not believe in Jesus Christ.
When omniscience fed Abraham, Isaac and Jacob into the divine decree they printed out under the principle of election, foreknowledge and foreordination but when God's omniscience fed Nahor, Ishmael and Esau into the decree they printed out reprobation, condemnation and eternal judgment from God.
This explains that the origin of the true Jewish race and true Israel is spiritual from election, foreknowledge and foreordination from God it is not from the biological gene pool of Abraham.
