In our verse by verse study of Romans we are in Rom 9:13; that is a quote from Mal 1:2-3; So far we have "As it stands written that Jacob I loved."
We noted that God's justice and God's righteousness combine with God's omniscience to form God's holiness or God's integrity that is described as God's impersonal love. At the moment Jacob believed in Jesus Christ God's justice imputed God's judicial righteousness to Jacob that made him a target for God's personal love.
Therefore the love of God that has always loved His own righteousness from eternity past now loves Jacob who is also a possessor of His righteousness. The active voice: God produces the action of the verb that is the product of God's propitiation, redemption, and justification by imputation.
The qal active participle of the Hebrew verb "ahav" (love). In the active voice describes something that is continuous.
With this we have the conjunctive particle "de" (but) that is an adversative conjunction emphasizing the difference between God's attitude toward Jacob and His attitude toward Esau.
Then another accusative singular direct object from the definite article "ho" (the) used as a demonstrative pronoun with the proper noun Esau. So we have the same construction for the phrase "that Esau."
The direct object comes first because it emphasizes the individual personal difference between the twins. Then the aorist active indicative from the verb "miseo" (hate) that is a mental attitude sin of hatred so our phrase is translated, "but I hated that Esau."
Again the aorist tense is a constantive aorist that describes the action of the verb in its entirety, and refers to the fact that Esau refused to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ so he remained under God's condemnation and wrath because of spiritual death.
But his twin Jacob by believing in the Lord Jesus Christ received God's grace gift by believing and as a result became a patriarch of the Jewish race that formed up Israel as God's first priest nation.
The active voice tells us that God produces the action of the verb as an anthropopathism that describes God's attitude toward Esau by using language of accommodation to describe the consequences of his rejection of God's grace gift of God's judicial righteousness and eternal life.
Hatred is a sin and God is perfect so He cannot sin. That means that God does not actually hate Esau but He uses hate as an anthropopathism using the language of accommodation to explain His judicial policy toward unbelievers because of their perpetual status in spiritual death from biological birth to biological death.
Unbelievers remain under condemnation and wrath from God because they refuse to accept God's grace gift of perfect imputed judicial righteousness and eternal life by being born again through faith in Jesus Christ.
We understand hatred and therefore we can understand that Esau as an unbeliever was under a principle or policy of rejection, condemnation and wrath because of his refusal to adjust to God's justice by believing in Jesus Christ for salvation.
The indicative mood is declarative of reality that is explained with an anthropopathism. This is not describing God's actual attitude but it does describe the consequences of rejecting God's love and grace.
We see here that God's omniscience only fed actual facts into the divine decree and the actual facts find that Esau is an unbeliever while they find that Jacob as a believer.
They are twins so one becomes a Jew the other remains a Gentile. The only difference between them was their free volitional choice. Jacob believed in Jesus and Esau did not.
As a result the printout from the decree for Jacob was election, foreknowledge, and predestination whereas the printout for Esau was reprobation, condemnation, retribution, judgment and wrath.
Both Jacob and Esau had the same free will so they both had the same opportunity to believe in Jesus Christ for salvation.
When Jesus Christ was nailed to the cross all of the sins of both Esau and Jacob were imputed to Jesus Christ and judged by God's justice. They both had the same opportunity but one used his free will to believe in Jesus Christ; one used his free will to reject Jesus Christ.
It was God's will that both Esau and Jacob be saved. The directive will of God was that He wanted both of them to be saved. 1Tim 2:3-4;
The fact that Esau rejected Jesus Christ indicates the reality of human volition acting independently from God's directive will under God's permissive will. God's sovereignty permitted Esau to reject Jesus Christ and suffer the consequences of God's wrath.
This emphasizes the fact that God through the divine decree did not coerce or tamper with free human volition. The divine decree only records the reality of what happens in history before it happens.
Foreknowledge in the divine decree establishes certainty with regard to the believer but God's decree does not originate from His foreknowledge. The decree originates from His omniscience that feeds the facts and only the facts into the decree.
To put foreknowledge before or on a par with omniscience is the beginning of a series of confusions that result in a total and complete blackout with regard to the believer's personal responsibility after salvation.
These doctrines have a great deal to do with what constitutes the Christian way of life and to put foreknowledge on a par with omniscience, even though both are functions of God, is one of the most disastrous things that could happen because it rejects the fact that mankind has free volition.
God's foreknowledge makes nothing certain; it simply perceives what is in the decree and makes it certain. What is certain is the fact that you have free will. What is certain is the fact that you are going to make decisions, good and bad, with your free will.
What is certain is the fact that God knew what decisions you should use your free will to choose to do but God is not going to tamper with your free will He is just going to let it play out. If He tampered with free will we are simply robots, and the angelic conflict is not resolved.
God's decree determines the certainty of future of events but the decree does not directly affect or cause any event. Cause and effect is the interrelationship of innumerable free volitions interacting under God's permissive will.
God knew that Esau would reject Jesus Christ and that Jacob would believe in Jesus Christ and he let both happen and the consequences play out.
For example: Until a lady gets married she is a free agent. Then one day she makes a free will decision and she accepts some man as her husband.
Once she does that she has surrendered some of her free will to him and therefore he makes decisions that affect her. One day she might want to stay in bed and catch up on sleep but the husband says she is going to get out of bed and go to church with him.
When that happens you have exactly what we have here. She surrenders some of her free will to him so he makes the final decision in that area. That is cause and effect. She willingly submitted her own free will to the authority of the husband so she has to deal with the consequences
One of the greatest issues in marriage is that the woman surrenders some of her free volition to the husband so that the husband can overrule her at any time. That is the interaction of free volition described in Gen 3:16;
You have the female challenge; you have the male veto. The doctrine of God's decree at all times recognizes interacting free will choices. God has put order in the human race by establishing legitimate authority over free volition.
Your soul and your volition in your soul is the first authority. For example, if your soul decided that it was time to exercise but your body objects with pain. Your soul overrules your body it, so you exercised with the pain. That is called self-discipline but it is really a system of authority.
When you have two souls one male and one female in marriage the responsibility for the final decision is made by the male because God has established the male as the authority in marriage.
Then when you have two or more souls, the "or more" being children then both the male and the female have authority over the children, so the children under God's mandate are to be subject to the volition of their parents. Eph 6:1-3;
Authority makes it possible for all of us to live together in a civilized fashion so authority becomes a very important issue in life. Authority makes it possible for a maximum number of free people to follow the principles of freedom in their state of inequality.
Morality is not only keeping the Ten Commandments but it also requires submission to the authority principles of divine establishment.
God foreknows all events as certainly future. He knows this because He has decreed them and foreknowledge is merely the printout of that decree. Omniscience feeds the facts into the decree foreknowledge prints them out.
God's decree applies equally to all future events of every kind, to the free actions of free moral agents as well as the actions of necessary agents that execute authority that creates the relationship between free will and authority, and to the sinful actions as well as the honorable actions.
This explains that God has not only decreed ends as means, but it also explains that God has decreed means as ends.
You no free will choice with regard to your parents. Only God knew who your parents would be and He knew it in eternity past. You had nothing to say about it, but once you came into the world as a child of parents eventually your own volition began to function.
God's omniscience fed into the decree a Gentile by the name of Abram. God knew that this man become a believer called Abraham and that he would eventually have eight children. He also knew the law of primogeniture. But He knew that it would not the firstborn named Ishmael but the second born named Isaac that would believe in Jesus Christ and be in the line of Israel.
He also knew that Isaac would have twins and that one would be a Jew (Jacob) and that one would remain a Gentile (Esau). He knew that Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob would be the origin of a new race, God's chosen race.
What does that mean? It became necessary in the course of human history to have a special nation to represent God, to become the recipients of God's revelation that would be put in writing as the Old Testament.
It became necessary for one nation to become the missionary nation that would set the precedence for all national function in the areas of freedom and establishment. It also became necessary for this freedom to become the basis for evangelism of believers, and from the evangelism of believers to the believer's advance to spiritual maturity.
During first two thousand years during the Age of the Gentiles there had not been such a nation so internationalism inevitably occurred. Internationalism is the system that Satan who rules the world actually gains overt control over the world.
That is what is wrong with the United Nations or any other system of internationalism, religious or political. Therefore God started a new dispensation, the dispensation of Israel and God's chosen people were elected to lead it.
So that starting with the Exodus from Egypt there would be a national entity that would represent God in evangelism, in missionary activity, and in spiritual growth. That continued throughout the dispensation of Israel until the Jewish Age came to a halt after they rejected Jesus Christ as their Messiah and He ascended and was seated at God's right hand.
Then He sent the Holy Spirit and the Church Age began as the formation of God's spiritual royal family. Then in 70AD forty years after the Church Age began God took Israel out under the fifth cycle of discipline for the last time. In August of 70 AD when Jerusalem fell and the Temple was destroyed and the times of the Gentiles began.
The times of the Gentiles is a phrase that Paul used in the New Testament (Rom 11:25;) to describe the fact that no Jewish nation from that time until the second advent of Jesus Christ would or could be or is qualified to be a client nation to God and that, in fact, Israel would be scattered throughout the earth.
Even if many biological Jews would come together to form a nation in the land that God had promised to them during the Church Age they could not and would not be a client nation to God. Their concentration in the land only gives Satan and his evil minions an opportunity to try to destroy them.
During the times of the Gentiles Gentile nations would become client nations to God. And above all, during the times of the Gentiles the Gentile client nation to God must be a haven for the Jewish race. The Jewish race must be protected not only from the usual tyrannies of history but from the abnormal hatred of the Jews that satan has always sponsored since Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
Satan's primary objective has been and will continue to be to destroy the Jewish race until Jesus casts him into the abyss at the Second Advent. (Rev 20:3;)
Therefore, it becomes absolutely necessary that a client nation provide a safe haven for the Jews, to give them the same rights as all of its citizens, and to make sure that anti-Semitism never rears its ugly head.
Anti-Semitism is like a grenade with the pin pulled, it is the quickest way to destroy a nation and pro-Semitism is the quickest way for a nation to have God's blessing. We see a massive shift toward the evil of anti-Semitism in client nation USA at this time.
Therefore God's purposes relating the events of human history constitute one single all-comprehensive intention that comprehends all events, the free as free, the necessary as necessary, together with all of their causes, conditions, successions, and relations, as one indivisible system every link of which is essential to the whole.
