In our verse-by-verse study of Romans last time we finished Rom 9:27 and started on Rom 9:28;
These verses are documentation from the Old Testament or TANACH regarding God's faithfulness to the Jews regardless of what happens to them during the course of history.
Last time we noted the first phrase of verse 28 "For the Lord will execute his word on the earth" is the correct translation, and it refers to the Second Advent.
Next we have a complementary participle and a modal participle. The present active participle of "sunteleo" is the complementary participle. The word means to complete, to bring about, to finish, to consummate so we will translate it (completing).
The static present tense describes a doctrinal fact that is taken for granted as an axiomatic reality referring to the Second Advent with the restoration of Israel as God's client nation and the total termination of any possibility of any more great blot-outs in Israel. The active voice explains that Jesus Christ produces the action of the verb at the Second Advent.
The complementary participle complements the idea of the action of the main verb. The main verb: "he will execute his word." Then the second participle that is present active, and the verb is "suntemno" (cut short or to execute rapidly). This is how he is going to execute His decree.
This is a historical present that views God's decree in eternity past with the vividness of a current event. The active voice: God established the decree in eternity past when God's omniscience separated reality from potentiality and entered reality into His decree.
He decreed certain things based on Israel's volition including the great big blot-out from their negative volition that resulted in the printout of periodic holocaust judgment.
But the printout of foreknowledge also included the fulfillment of God's unconditional promises regarding Israel becoming God's permanent client nation beginning at the Second Advent, continuing throughout the Millennium and then in eternity forever.
The modal participle describes the way in which the action of the main verb is accomplished so the best translation is "For the Lord will execute his word on the earth, completing what he also decreed."
The adjunctive use of the conjunction "kai" (also) explains the fact that the decree existed in eternity past. Long before space, time or creatures existed God's decree existed. That is why we have the word "also," translated from the adjunctive use of "kai that goes with the modal participle, not the complementary participle.
Christ is often called Alpha and Omega, the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet.
As Alpha God's omniscience fed the facts into the decree. Jesus Christ was there in eternity past. He knew as Alpha, existing in eternity past, every thought of every person who would ever live and every decision of every person who would ever live; and, every action of every person who would ever live.
God possessed perfect glory in eternity past when He established His decree and He will possess that same glory as Omega glory in eternity future. The glory He had when He programmed the decree is the same glory He will have when the believing Jews welcome Him back to the earth at His Second Advent.
But when He comes back He not only has that perfect essence as God that He has always had, but He will also be true Jewish humanity in line of David forever as His augmented Omega glory.
What makes this augmented Omega glory possible? The first advent makes His augmented Omega glory possible. There is no augmented Omega glory without a virgin giving birth to a son who is named "Emmanuel" (God with us) referring to Jesus.
The augmented Omega glory of the Lord Jesus Christ is predicated on the fact that He came into the world through virgin birth without the imputation of Adam's sin and the old sin nature. He lived a life of perfection even though He was tempted far beyond anything we can ever know or understand.
The augmented Omega glory is related to the first advent, and every Jew who has blotted out the first advent from his thinking because of his negative volition rejects that augmented Omega glory and eternal life
This verse refers to the Second Advent that is the moment in history when Jesus Christ's augmented Omega glory is revealed to Israel.
At the Second Advent Jesus Christ will execute His word to the Jews through their deliverance at the Armageddon campaign, the restoration of believing Jews to form the new client nation, and the fulfillment of the unconditional covenants to Israel.
When that occurs God will have completed what He decreed regarding the future of the true Jews, the regenerate remnant of Israel in time during the Millennium and in eternity forever.
There will be a remnant of true Jews comprised of those who did not blot out the first advent who are believers in Jesus Christ that are scattered throughout the earth during the Tribulation for safe keeping. They will be gathered back to the land as the last and eternal client nation to God at the Second Advent.
The principle behind all of this is that what God decrees, God executes; what God promises, God fulfils. He always keeps His word. Sodom and Gomorrah is a perfect illustration of a big Gentile blot-out that is coming up in the next verse.
Expanded Translation Rom 9:28;"For the Lord will execute his word on the earth, rapidly completing what he also decreed."
He decreed it as Alpha; He completes it as Omega. We see here that the omniscience of Jesus Christ who is God fed reality into God's decree in eternity past. That reality includes every human thought, decision, and action in human history.
On a personal basis the programming of the decree includes every person in history from Adam and the woman down to the last person living on the last day of the Millennium.
God will complete what He has decreed. God the Son will bring about and finish human history so that every free volitional thought, every decision, and every action known by His omniscience in eternity past will actually occur.
Every Jew who has ever been involved in the big blot-out is a world record holder that makes the Pharaoh of Egypt's blot out look small. They all break his record for their blot out of the soul.
Therefore, when they blot the first advent out of their minds through their own negative free will then God blots them out of human history. In that way He eliminates the cancer so that others can be evangelized.
God will be glorified whether man's free will decisions are compatible with His policy or antagonistic to His policy. God's plan moves on with or without you because God's plan of does not depend on man; actually man depends on God.
In spite of all of satans antagonisms and human negative volition God's plan with its stated objectives moves on to completion, unhindered by any form of opposition, human or angelic. One of the greatest forms of opposition to God's plan is Israel's big blot-out.
Jesus Christ controls history so Jesus Christ has provided from His Word solutions to every disaster of life but all of those solutions including common grace, efficacious grace and, post salvation, persistence in the perception of God's Word of Truth are predicated on the first advent of Jesus Christ.
For the believer who persists in the perception of doctrine there is no problem or difficulty for which there is not a perfect solution in the doctrinal content of God's Word as it is transferred to the believer's soul under the ministry of God the Holy Spirit.
Isaiah's words "Be shocked, and amazed in Isa 29:9 (NIV NET note 11); are an excellent way to introduce the subject of the big blot-out from the standpoint of the Jews because of the terrible things that have happened to them historically that have been shocking.
Probably the most shocking thing about the big blot-out is the resulting judgments of God that occur periodically throughout history. There are several ways to become aware of the big blot-out and one of them is to see the shocking events that have happened to the Jews in history.
The next two statements in Isa 29:9; actually describe the affects of the big blot-out. "... blind yourselves, and be blind ..." This is a short definition of the big blot-out that comes from completely ignoring of the first advent of Jesus Christ and completely blotting it out of the mind through the maximum use of negative volition that replaces the previous a world record for negative volition held by the Pharaoh of the Exodus generation.
"... they stagger, but not from strong drink ..." They are not drunk, they are staggering from something far greater than being drunk, they are staggering from God's judgment as He judges them for their huge blot-out.
Isa 29:10; "For the Lord has poured over you a spirit of deep sleep ..." If you want a description of the Jews today and in every generation when the big blot-out exists, here it is. They actually have in their spiritual heritage a detailed account of the first advent. "... he has shut your eyes, O prophets ..." They were completely blind to the first advent. "... he has covered your heads, O seers."
Isa 29:11; - "Therefore the entire vision (first advent) shall be to you like the words of a sealed book..." absolutely obscured by their negative volition "which, when they give it to one who is literate, saying, Please read this, he will reply, I cannot read it because it is sealed.
v12; "When the book is given to one who is illiterate, saying, Please read this, he will reply, I cannot read." The literate say they can't read it because it is sealed by the big blot-out; and the illiterate cannot read it because he cannot read.
This describes the categories of those under the big blot-out from negative volition. The literate who understood but they completely rejected it because they didn't want to believe it were the same the illiterate who couldn't read so they couldn't understand it.
Isa 29:13; "Then the Lord said, Because this people draw near with their mouth, and honor me with their lips" - taking the rituals that reveals Jesus Christ in His first advent, in the greatest of detail, and honor with their lips, and yet at the very same time they rejected what the things that they were saying and doing actually represented in their thinking.
"... but they remove their hearts (thinking) from me (first advent), and their respect for me (Jesus Christ in first advent),
And (instead of believing in me) their respect is for the commandments learned by memorization rather than the person who authored the commandments.
" They keep the commandments, producing a self-righteousness, and they go through the rituals without the reality of believing in the Lord Jesus Christ who is represented in the ritual.
Isa 29:14; - "Therefore, behold, I will once again deal wonderfully with this people" - there is always a pivot; there is always a remnant of believers in every generation. God's faithfulness to Israel never ceases. Even though they fail in certain generations with the big blot-out He is still faithful to them and provides for them eternal salvation.
"Doing wonderfully a wonderful thing" is the restoration of Israel in spite of the big blot-out in any specific generation: in spite of God's judgments that destroys so many of them, they are still like the dust of the earth and the sand of the sea, and the stars of the heavens.
"Therefore the wisdom of their wise men will perish" - the Jews are very smart, but no matter how brilliant they are they are blind toward the first advent, which completely neutralizes their great intelligence.
"And the intelligence of their intelligence shall vanish" - any time there is a holocaust as a result of the big blot-out. This looks forward to Romans 11:8-10.
