In our study of Romans last time we finished our Expanded Translation of Rom 9:28;"For the Lord will execute his word on the earth, rapidly completing what he also decreed."
God's decree includes every free will thought, decision and action of every person in the human race so it contains a lot of negative thoughts, decisions, and actions.
This establishes a great blot out regarding God, Jesus Christ, and God's Word of Truth. We see the results of that negative volition in human history. It is occurring right now across the world and at the moment it is especially obvious in Western Europe where evil people who previously destroyed God's first Gentile client nation, the Byzantine Empire, are destroying what God's client nations have built in Western Europe.
God judges these evil actions. Isaiah's words "Be shocked, and amazed in Isa 29:9 (NIV NET note 11); are an excellent way to introduce the subject of the big blot-out from the standpoint of the Jews who were previously God's client nation because of the terrible things that have happened to them historically that shock us.
Probably the most shocking thing about the big blot-out is the resulting judgments of God that occur periodically throughout history. There are several ways to become aware of the big blot-out and one of them is to see the shocking events that have happened to the Jews in history.
The next two statements in Isa 29:9; actually describe the results of the big blot-out. "... blind yourselves, and be blind ..." This is a short definition of the big blot-out that comes from completely ignoring of the first advent of Jesus Christ and blotting it out of the mind from maximum negative volition that replaces the previous a world record for negative volition held by the Pharaoh of the Exodus generation.
"... they stagger, but not from strong drink ..." They are not drunk, they are staggering from something far greater than being drunk, they are staggering from God's judgment as He judges them for their huge blot-out regarding Jesus Christ.
Isa 29:10; "For the Lord has poured over you a spirit of deep sleep ..." If you want a description of the Jews today and in every generation when the big blot-out exists, this is it. They actually have in their spiritual heritage a detailed account of the first advent. "... He has shut your eyes (the prophet's) ..." They were completely blind to the first advent. "... He has covered your heads, (the seers)."
Isa 29:11; - "The entire vision (first advent) shall be to you like the words of a sealed book..." absolutely obscured by their negative volition "which, when they give it to one who is literate, saying, Please read this, he will reply, I cannot read it because it is sealed.
v12; "When the book is given to one who is illiterate, saying, Please read this, he will reply, I cannot read." The literate say they can't read it because it is sealed by their big blot-out; and the illiterate cannot read it because they cannot read.
This describes the categories of those under the big blot-out from their negative volition. The literate who understood but they completely reject it because they don't want to believe it were the same as the illiterate who couldn't read at all so they couldn't understand it.
Isa 29:13; "Then the Lord said, Because this people draw near with their words, and honor me with their lips" - observing the rituals that reveal Jesus Christ in His first advent, with the greatest of detail, and honor with what they say and do but at the very same time in their thinking they reject what the rituals they were saying and doing actually represented.
"... but they remove their hearts (thinking) from me (first advent), and their respect for me (Jesus Christ in first advent), and (instead of believing in me) they respect the commandments they learned by rote memorization instead of the one who wrote the commandments.
" They keep the commandments, producing a self-righteousness, and they go through the rituals without the reality of believing in the Lord Jesus Christ who is represented in the ritual.
Isa 29:14; NET - "Therefore, I will again do an amazing thing for these people" - there is always a pivot; there is always a remnant of believers in every generation. God's faithfulness to Israel never ceases. Even though they fail in certain generations with the big blot-out He is still faithful to them and provides for them eternal salvation.
The amazing thing is the restoration of Israel in spite of the big blot-out in any specific generation: in spite of God's judgments that destroys so many of them, they are still like the dust of the earth and the sand of the sea, and the stars of the heavens.
"wise men will have nothing to say" - the Jews are very smart, but no matter how brilliant they are they are blind toward the first advent, and that completely neutralizes their great intelligence.
"the sages will have no explanation" - any time there is a holocaust as a result of the big blot-out they don't understand it because the cause is spiritual and they are spiritually dead. This looks forward to Romans 11:8-10.
NASB Translation Rom 9:28; for the Lord will execute His word on the earth completely and quickly.
Rom 9:29; is a quotation from Isa 1:9. This analogy can only be explained by the Alpha and Omega passages of Romans as they relate to the big blot-out. It begins with the connective use of "kai" (and) that introduces the result that comes from what was said previously.
Then we have the comparative particle "kathos" (just as) followed by the nominative singular subject, the proper noun "Esaias" (Isaiah), and the perfect active indicative of "proeireken" (prophesied) is the verb.
So far we have "And just as Isaiah has prophesied." The intensive perfect tense describes completed action with a focus on the continuing results.
Isaiah's prophecy is written with the result that it stands written forever in the TANACH, the Old Testament canon of scripture. The active voice: Isaiah under the ministry of God the Holy Spirit is that one man who produced the action of the verb. The indicative mood is declarative for the reality of Isaiah's prophetical ministry.
Paul quotes Isaiah 1:9; that in its original context was a reference to the administration of the 4th cycle of discipline to the southern kingdom in BC 701 when Sennacherib invaded the region.
The immediate context includes Isa 1:7-8; that describes the devastation, the holocaust that came as a result of the big blot-out. Isaiah 1:9 - "Unless the Lord of the armies (Jesus Christ) had left us a few survivors we would be like Sodom, we would be like Gomorrah."
That few was the pivot that made it possible for the Judah to only be culpable for the 4th cycle of discipline and not to be destroyed under the 5th cycle of discipline like Sodom and Gomorrah were.
This is a comforting verse about the remnant or the pivot of mature believers throughout history. Under the principle that Jesus Christ controls history it is the pivot of mature believers in any given nation that delivers the nation in time of historical disaster by their very presence in that client nation.
The Jewish southern kingdom continued as a client nation in the time of Isaiah and Hezekiah because believers responded to the teaching of God's Word of Truth with positive volition.
This same thing can occur in the USA in the coming years but he pivot's positive volition can carry the nation regardless of satan's evildoers because Jesus Christ controls history.
Rom 9:29; Next we have the protasis of a second class condition that is introduced by the conditional particle "ei" (if), plus the negative "me" (not) that rejects the idea.
It is literally translated, "If not" but a better translation in the sense of its idiom is, (except, except that or unless.) Then we have the nominative subject, "kurios" (Lord) that is used here for the Lord Jesus Christ in His Omega glory.
Omega refers to Jesus Christ in hypostatic union as undiminished deity and true humanity in one person forever, beginning with the virgin birth, continuing with the incarnation,
This includes His impeccability, His ministry, and His work on the cross, followed by His physical death, resurrection, ascension, session, and His return at the Second Advent.
Part of the big blot-out is the fact that the Jews who have negative volition recognize the God of Israel under the title of Adonai Elohim, the Alpha glory of Jesus Christ, but in his thinking he completely blots out Jesus' first advent and its implications, and therefore rejects the Omega glory of the Lord Jesus Christ.
The word that follows is "sabaoth" (armies), it is a transliteration of the Hebrew word Sa-ba-oth. That describes large groups of people. "Except the Lord of the armies," it refers to the Lord Jesus Christ, the Shekinah glory of believers, who controls history.
Then the aorist active indicative verb" egkataleipo" (to leave in a place or situation, to leave behind, to forsake, or to abandon). To leave as a remnant or a pivot for the preservation of a client nation is what is being described here so it is translated (had allowed to remain).
This Greek word tells us that even in a great holocaust that it is always the Jew who is a part of the big blot out because his negative volition who is removed but believers is every state between infancy and maturity, are permitted to live. They are left on the earth during one of these great divine judgments so no believer with positive volition is directly involved in a holocaust.
The culminative aorist tense views the action of the Lord in its entirety but regards it from the viewpoint of existing results, that describes certain periods of judgment in history when very few people in the Jewish race are preserved except those who are believers.
The active voice: Jesus Christ as the Lord of the armies, the God of Israel, produces the action. The indicative mood is declarative for historical reality and the perpetuation of the spiritual descendants of Abraham throughout history.
Next we have a dative plural indirect object from the personal pronoun "hemin" (to us). The indirect object describes those in whose interest the act is performed. It is in the interest of the Jews to be perpetuated and it is in the interest of the Gentiles because they only exist on the earth because there are Jews.
If there are no Jews there is no need for Gentiles so it all depends on the survival of the Jew. The accusative singular direct object from the noun "sperma" (seed or descendants) is used for the spiritual descendants of Abraham the racial Jew who also believes in the Lord Jesus Christ who is a spiritual descendant of Abraham.
Now the apodosis, We have the particle "an" (not) that signifies the apodosis of a second class condition. The second class condition contains the supposition based on information in the protasis, and therefore the apodosis is determined to be unfulfilled because there will never be a generation when there are not some Jews who believe in Christ.
The people of Sodom and Gomorrah have completely disappeared from history; the Jew continues in history. In every generation of history certain Jews believe in Christ, forming the basis for a remnant that forms a pivot that is comprised of the spiritual seed of Abraham.
Next we have an aorist passive indicative of the verb "ginomai " (to be or to become) again with the particle "an" (not) describing an unreality. "An" tells us that the action of the verb is dependent upon some circumstance that in this case is the existence of a pivot, a remnant of born-again Jews who are the spiritual seed of Abraham.
